CAMP MAY FLATHER

Take a Virtual Tour of Camp May Flather.

Camp May Flather, a 45-acre historical camp, is nestled in the George Washington National Forest not far from Harrisonburg, Virginia. Girl Scouts have enjoyed this camp since it was built in the early 1930. The Stone Lodge and dining hall are a couple of the original structures that are still being enjoyed. About 150 girls entering grades four through 12 attend camp each of the eight one-week sessions. Girls entering grades 8-12 also have a couple two-week sessions to choose from. Girls entering grades 11 and 12 also have the opportunity to be a Junior Counselor for a three-week block of time.

CAMP PROGRAM

The camp program ranges from general camping skills to learning about farming and country living to adventure programs including rock climbing, caving, and canoeing. Most campers also get the opportunity to work as part of a team at the challenge course. All the girls also get the opportunity to swim in the pool and lake, hike, make crafts, cookout, and play games.

FACILITIES

Living Units, each accommodating 24-26 campers, consist of a unit house, latrines, washstand, fire circle and glen shelters or platform tents. Campers and staff live in glen shelters or platform tents. A glen shelter is a wood structure with four sides, a wooden floor and wooden roof. They have canvas curtains that can be closed in inclement weather. Platform tents are large canvas tents that have wooden floors. Each structure sleeps 4-6 campers; staff members stay in a separate shelter in the unit. Cots, mattresses and mosquito netting are provided.

Additional facilities include a dining hall and kitchen, camp office, health center, arts and crafts building, trading post, shower house, staff building (for breaks) and swimming pool.

LOCAL FEATURES

May Flather is nestled in the beautiful George Washington National forest and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Downtown Harrisonburg is about 45 minutes from camp and is a mid-sized college town with wonderful places to eat, local theatre spots, novel boutiques and the campus of James Madison University. Harrisonburg also has a local shopping mall and theatres.

WHAT THE STAFF SAYS

"Camp is the hardest, most rigorous, most tiring, most rewarding and most touching thing you will ever do in your life. Your camp experience is defiantly what you make of it but if you make it the best and go in with the attitude it will be the best, you will have a life altering experience." -"Campbells" summer '02
