Girl Scout Troop Builds English Literacy in Romania
Dear GSCNC Staff,
I am a Peace Corps Volunteer currently serving as an English Teacheer in Recas, Romania and have been recently blessed with a generous donation from Girl Scout Troop 220 from Fairfax, Virginia. I wanted to write you both and let you know how thankful I am to this troop and to the Girl Scouts of America as a whole.
The troop is led by Beth Collins, who is actually a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer-she served in Africa years ago. As I am from Fairfax, Virginia as well, I was put in contact with Beth and she generously asked what her troop could do for my students. After careful consideration, I told her that it would be wonderful if I could have some books sent so that I could facilitate an "English Literature" portion into my classes. The kids here do not have the opportunity to read as a whole class because they don't have the funds to buy books for every student. Usually students share books and many times, only half the class has a book to use. I cannot make it mandatory for students to buy the books because they cannot afford it.
After talking about this need with Beth, she and her Troop hosted a fundraiser and raised over $500.00 to buy 30 copies of "The Hatchet" for my students! The students were overjoyed to have books (and NEW books at that!) and have been looking forward to reading in class and discussing the adventures if Brian and his deserted island. I never would have had this opportunity if it weren't for Beth Collins and Troop 220.
I wanted to send you some pictures to show you how excited the kids are. This is my 12th grade class, but I am also using the books with 9th, 10th, and 11th.
Thank you for all that you do. Truly GSA and Troop 220 have made a difference in the lives of the students here and in my life as a teacher. I am so grateful.
Sincerely,
Sara Hughlett
