The girls designed the ceremony themselves, choosing to read a poem, sing a patriotic song, conduct a flag ceremony & lay the wreath. The girls made the wreath using only natural elements -- dried flowers, fall leaves and wood medallions made from fallen branches. After the ceremony, the girls spent the afternoon exploring the grounds and buildings of Mount Vernon. |

The girls helped plant 500 trees as a buffer for Little Catocin Creek in Frederick County as part of a restoration project with Chesapeake Bay Foundation. They learned how important it is to save the creeks from erosion and how the trees help strengthen the banks and how the creek in Frederick winds up in the Chesapeake Bay. |

 | Girl Scouts Participated in Coastal Cleanup This fall, girls from Troop 2288 of Silver Spring, MD participated in the International Coastal Cleanup at Hains Point, DC, where they collected 4 full bags of garbage including plastic bottles, pieces of Styrofoam, bottle tops, cigarette butts, and food wrappers. The Girl Scouts were surprised to find so many toys, like yo-yos and glow sticks, littering the area. More than 50 bags of garbage were removed from the Hains Point site at the event. |

 | Girl Scout Troop received national award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 4088 from Alexandria, Virginia received a national first place award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Troop members Elizabeth Lamb, Amanda Poon, and Kate Werwie designed and created a fabric banner interpreting this year's DAR theme, "America, Land of Opportunity." The banner won the DAR's Kate Waller Barrett Chapter award in January 2009, followed by the Eastern Division award in March 2009 and the national award in September. |

Ten girls from the troop helped to renovate a large storage facility into a new office building for Habitat for Humanity. They framed several walls and doors while learning many new skills with hand and power tools. |

 | Girl Scouts Grow Green for Bronze Award Project Girls from Troop 2760 in Lorton completed their Bronze Award project by rebuilding a garden at the Lorton Community Action Center. The troop received donations from Silverbrook and Heather Hill Nurseries, Walmart, Costco, plus family and friends, to help implement the project. The girls removed two trash bags full of weeds, planted a large variety of plants, flowers and bushes (lilacs, box woods, hostas, peonies, azaleas, marigolds, & daisies), and spread three truck loads of mulch. They also refinished two benches and completed the garden with a new bird bath. |

 | Eagle Enjoyed Camp Coles Trip This Summer Too On June 8th, a male bald eaglet was found on the ground, trying to fly. Camp caretaker Bryan Barr contacted the Wildlife Center of Virginia who picked up the eagle (using a big blanket to cover him) and took him to their center in Fairfax. They diagnosed that the eaglet was healthy and uninjured but severely dehydrated and starving. They put an IV in him to re-hydrate him and fed him. They will consider releasing him back at Camp Coles Trip, depending upon the environmental conditions for survival. |

 | Girl Scouts "STAND UP" in support of Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign On June 23, Girl Scouts from Troop 2288 participated in a national press conference raising awareness about legislation strengthening state teen driving laws. The girls had recently completed GSCNC's new Road Safety patch. A billboard ad, entitled ‘Keys,' was unveiled at the event and will be on display in the atrium of Gallery Place in Washington, DC. This ad features over 4,900 actual key chains representing the number of teens who died nationally in 2007 as a result of teen-related car crashes. |

The girls listened to native stories about the stars and constellations, learned how Lakota children learn about the buffalo, and examined some beautiful native carvings, dolls, and beadwork.
