 Girl Scouts Forever GreenFor Immediate Release Girl Scouts Forever Green Girl Scouts Distribute Reusable Grocery Bags at Giants WASHINGTON-The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital (GSCNC) as part of the Forever Green Community Action Project, teamed up with Boeing to distribute free of charge, reusable grocery bags to shoppers at Giant supermarkets in the District of Columbia New Year's Day. The District of Columbia will begin charging a tax on plastic bags to support the new Anacostia River Protection Fund. Taking care of and protecting the Earth is a concern for most girls. According to a Girl Scout Research Institute study, over 90 percent of girls think protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility and that individuals and companies should play a part in protecting the environment. "We are honored to have Boeing support Girl Scouts' environmental initiatives," said Kathryn Benison GSCNC Area Manager for the District of Columbia. "Boeing contributed 2,000 reusable grocery bags for Girl Scouts to give-away. We hope this will help District residents who may find it difficult to purchase reusable bags." Girl Scout troops were at seven Giant food stores in the District of Columbia distributing the bags as well as information about why reusable bags are better for the environment than plastic bags. "We realize that our planet faces many challenges and that reusable bags will help eliminate thousands of plastic and paper shopping bags that are choking our planet," said Benison. The Girl Scouts want everyone to know that over 100,000 marine animals, including dolphins, sea turtles and whales die every year because of plastic bags; the use of reusable grocery bags helps protect these animals and our environment. About Girl Scouts Forever Green Community Action Forever Green Community Action Projects are girl-led environmental projects which focus on topics such as: energy use, improving air quality, water use, waste management and green space. In 2010 we anticipate 150-200 Girl Scouts in grades K-12 will lead green action projects, with the help of 8,000 youth in their communities.
