Girl Scouts from Service Unit 70-17

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Girl Scout Service Unit 70-17 in partnership with Boy Scouts from troop 163 held a flag retirement ceremony at Loudoun Valley Community Center. The event began at sunset. After lighting a fire the Boy Scout troop members first explained and then demonstrated the proper procedure. First cutting the flag into fourths, removing the star section then cutting the stripes into three even pieces. Next removing the metal from the flags, and at last solemnly burning the spent flags to ash. Both boys and girls participated in retiring a total of 6 flags, whose ashes were then taken to be buried as is the tradition. This was a wonderful way for our troop members to show respect for our great country and a fantastic learning evening! Submitted by Tia Walbridge.
