Local Girl Scouts Visit Japan
Teen Girl Scouts troops from Prince Georges County/MD and Virginia recently returned from an amazing and successful trip to Japan. Their trip had them visting five Japanese cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, Osaka, and Hiroshima) from July 17-26, 2012. Their most meaningful trip experience was interacting with their Japanese Girl Scout sisters at the Girl Scouts of Japan headquarters. The U.S. and Japanese Girl Scouts bonded during a pinning ceremony (U.S. Girl Scouts received the Japanese Girl Scouts friendship pin); over lunch; and SWAPs exchange. In addition, the U.S. Girl Scouts presented the Japanese Girl Scouts with a gift -- a crocheted blanket consisting of colors of the GSUSA program levels and visiting troop numbers, as well as taught the Japanese Girl Scouts the "Milk" action song. To see more pictures of the Maryland/Virginia Girl Scouts Japan trip experience, please check out this Facebook page. Submitted by Sharon Davis |

As part of the Brownies Through the Years Try-it, Grandmas Carol Cutler, Sandra Inskeep-Fox, and Sonja DeStefanis talked about what they did when they were scouts in the 1940s and 1950s and why scouting was important to them. They also taught the girls Girl Scout songs from back then, and how to make some traditional snacks. Now they are "The Peppiest Girls You Ever Saw" who know how to make muddy buddies and ants on a log. Submitted by Stephanie Archer. |

St. Mark Cadette Scouts Earned the Silver Award
Many of St. Mark Catholic School Cadettes have been busy working towards the highest award a Cadette can earn – the Silver Award. Earning this award is not an easy task - each girl identified an aspect of their community where they could work to make a difference. Next, each girl needed develop a Take Action Plan then spend at least 50 hours carrying out their plan. To complete a Silver Award, the girls needed to Carry Their Plan Forward which they did by leaving a How To Manual their sister scouts at St. Mark can use to repeat their activity. The manuals will be stored in the St. Mark Library for future troops to use. Sumitted by: Cindi McLean |
