Bowie, Md Girl Scouts Get Creative for Cookie Both Sale Junior Troop 1192 from Bowie Maryland held a cookie booth at the Sam's club in Severn, MD. Troop 595 & Maddie's Blankets
Girls from Troop 595 (SU 53-6 from Alexandria, Va) dropped off 12 blankets to Maddie Pelgrim who created a small fundraising business called Maddie's Blankets. Their troop completed these blankets as part of their Journey leadership award.
Maddie is a wonderfully inspiring young lady who has a goal to donate 10,000 blankets to foster children and shelter animals. Our girls enjoyed talking with her about how she created her small business when she was just 10 years old. Submitted by Sandy Graf |

100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting Birthday Dance
Senior Troop 6686 in Alexandria, VA hosted the annual Girl Scout Birthday Dance for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors on March 10 in the George Washington Middle School Cafeteria. The dance was for all of the young girls in Service Unit 60-8. The theme was Dancing Through the Decades so the Senior Troop made 252 cupcakes with special 100 year flags, had posters of Girl Scout uniforms and fashions from each decade. Rockville Girl Scouts Present Cookies to the City Council
On March 12, 2012, five Girl Scouts from Rockville, Maryland Service Unit 33-2 represented Girl Scout Cookies to the Rockville City Council. The Daisy, Brownie, Junior and two Cadette Girl Scouts each spoke about their accomplishments this year, including their Bronze and Silver award projects, the field trips and service projects. The girls had a great time and the council members were impressed with how well spoken the girls were. Annandale Cadettes earned their Silver Award Contributing to Local Youth
In Annandale, VA, three Cadette Scouts hosted the SU 55-5 Thinking Day event and worked with the venue, SU managers, and local troop leaders to welcome 250 local girls representing 18 countries. Admission to the event was a medium sized Teddy Bear. Scouts were encouraged to share the donation with another scout to keep down costs. Brenna, Victoria and Anya then stopped by the West Springfield Fire Department and dropped off 146 new bears to the station. These bears will ride along with the Fire Fighters/EMS to local emergencies to be given to affected children to hug and get comfort from. Submitted by Jenn Montes de Oca |

Association 33 Celebrates the 100th with Service and 800 Friends
Over 800 Girl Scouts from Association 33 gathered in Rockville, Maryland to earn the “100 Ways to celebrate the 100th” patch on Sunday, March 11, 2012. Each girl brought one item of non-perishable food to donate to Manna Food Center to complete the service requirement. Three troops from Gaithersburg, Maryland helped to organize the food in the Manna delivery truck, which filled up two giant tubs that stood to the waist of the Junior Girl Scouts! All of the scouts enjoyed learning about the food pyramid by becoming a part of it, exploring historical Girl Scout uniforms and books, and learning songs with Sing-a-long Service. Daisy Troop Celebrated 100th Anniversary with Investiture Ceremony
Daisy troop 5472 from Sterling, Virginia celebrated the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts through a Daisy Investiture Ceremony. Members of the troop recited the Girl Scout Promise and Law and what it means to them to be in Girl Scouts. The event also featured a flag ceremony done by members of Junior Girl Scout troop 6663. Thinking Day at St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds
Girl Scouts from Association 10 Service Unit 11 celebrated Thinking Day at St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds in Leonardtown, MD. The girls attending learned about 15 sister countries, traveling from “country to country”. In honor of the Girl Scout 100th birthday, representative countries were limited to those that had Girl Scouting/Guiding programs when Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts. Girl Scout Sunday
Girls from Daisy troop 6098, Brownie troop 3972, and Cadette troop 4207 of Alexandria, Virginia, and other Girl Scouts from the congregation were greeters and ushers at Trinity United Methodist Church on March 11, 2012 to mark Girl Scout Sunday. The girls sang Ah, la, la (Grab another hand) during Time With Young Christians and finished up by reciting the Girl Scout Promise. Pastor Phyllis Early even brought her Junior sash from when she was a Girl Scout. The troops provided an after-church snack of Girl Scout cookies.
Participation in Girl Scout Sunday was a highlight of an event-filled weekend to celebrate the 100-year birthday that included the annual Girl Scout Dance on Saturday evening and an all-council sing-along followed by the play Aladdin at a local theatre later Sunday afternoon. Girl Scout Navy Pride Event
More than 200 Girl Scouts and Leaders attended Southern Maryland's first ever Centenary of Naval Aviation and Girl Scouts Navy Pride SHARE workshop. The event was hosted by Association 10 - Service Unit 11 and held at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. The workshop enabled Girl Scouts to work on requirements of the “Navy Pride” Council’s Own award from Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast, introducing the Scouts to Leaders to Naval Aviation, career and leadership opportunities for women in the Navy, as well as the sacrifices made by Navy families. The girls visited several stations which featured several Officers and Chief Petty Officers from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, military family members, museum tours, flight deck tours and two service projects to benefit wounded warriors. Girl Scout Troop Tours the Capitol with Congressmen Jack Kingston
Congressman Jack Kingston took some time out to spend it with the girls from Troop 4488 in DC as they toured the the Capitol. Congressman Jack Kingston bought 100 boxes of Savannah Smiles (he is the Congressman for Savannah, GA!) and the girls delivered the cookies to him on this day. Adult Volunteer Celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting by Making a "New" Family Heirloom
Tracy L. Horstman, a 15+ year adult volunteer with GSCNC and Service Unit Cookie Manager for Association 80 Service Unit 5 got together with her women's minitry group from Dale City Baptist chursh and created a commemorative plate based on the 100th year patch at the Art from the Heart in Stafford, VA. She is calling it her “new” family heirloom. On March 12, 2012 Girl Scout's Birthday she proudly wore her Girl Scout uniform to work and enjoyed telling everyone about how Girl Scouts started. |

Girl Scouts Performed Pledge of Allegiance Ceremony
Brownie troop 766 (Olney/Brookeville area) recorded the Pledge of Allegiance for their elementary school. The school played their opening on the school's TV on Girl Scout's birthday on March 12. Girls were so excited to show their Girl Scout spirit. Brownie Troop Earned the Let's Pretend Badge
Brownie Troop 3459 from Ritchie Park Elementary School in Rockville, Maryland invited and hosted Daisy Troop 6108 to their meeting where they earned the Let's Pretend badge. The Brownies were terrific role models for the Daisies while the girls read very funny tongue twisters to one another, practiced breathing exercises, and decorated these springtime animal masks. Girls Aquired Team Building Skills on Mission: Sisterhood Journey
Senior Troop 384 chose rock climbing as part of their "Mission: Sisterhood" Journey. They invited the troop's Ambassadors girls to come along. The girls learned to belay, tie climbing knots and the necessary word commands for climbing in an introductory class. Everyone got to climb and belay each each other twice. Cadettes Enjoyed Cosmic Bowling
Girl Scout Troop 282 of Springfield, VA attended their Service Unit’s Cosmic Bowling event at the Fort Belvoir Bowling Center. The event was organized by Teen Troop 960 and has become a tradition for the Service Unit. Music, dancing, and a dinner buffet were included with bowling, making this event appealing to many ages and abilities. Junior Troop Took Action at Ronald McDonald House
Junior Troop 6194 from Gaithersburg, MD (SU 33-6) hosted a Winter Luau at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Baltimore as their Agent of Change Take Action project. The girls decided they wanted to take action to benefit children undergoing medical treatment after hearing of the personal experiences of one of their fellow Girl Scouts. The troop made blankets for the Welcome Project, collected pop tabs at their schools (The tabs are turned into cash to fuel the RMH shuttle buses), delivered Gift of Caring cookies, and they hosted an Activity Hour with a tropical theme. The girls ran activities that included a photo station, pin the coconut on the palm tree, skee ball, crafts and of course limbo and hula dancing. SU 31-2 Celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts with a Party
Service Unit 31-2 - 21 troops participated in a 100th anniversary party. Girls danced to popular songs from a DJ, games in the gym, short movies, facepaining and tattoos and many crafts like 100th anniversary SWAPs. All 130 girls sang "Happy Birthday Girls Scouts" and enjoyed cake. Service project-Troops were asked to donate birthday cake supplies for donations. Girl Scout Worked with the Seniors for Gold Project
A Girl Scout from Troop 5440 is working with the Girl Scouts and youth in the community to cook with the seniors at the Sunrise Senior Living Center in Fair Oaks, VA. She has started a program where the youth join with the seniors to cook favorite recipes. Everyone benefits from this program where the teens and residents are brought together in a fun setting! Brownie Troop Hosted the Country of Ecuador at World Thinking Day Event
The girls of Brownie Troop 3459 of Rockville and Potomac, Maryland hosted the beautiful country of Ecuador at Service Unit 33-9's annual World Thinking Day event on Sunday, February 26th. Over 160 girls participated in the event either as hosts of countries or guests visiting them. The Brownies from Ritchie Park Elementary School told their guests about the Ecuador's geography which includes the Costa (the Pacific coast), the Sierra (the Andes Mountains), the Oriente (the Amazon basin) and the Galapagos Islands. The girls demonstrated its culture by wearing traditional costumes and offering dried platanos as a snack. Ms. Vivien Lewis instructed the Brownies and and Mr. Marco Farfan of the Ecuadorian Embassy in Washington generously provided Ecuadorian flags, Frisbees and ribbon bracelets to each Girl Scout. Girl Scouts Completed the Be a PAL Patch Program
Fifth grade Girl Scout Troop 2971 in Arlington, VA held a Food Allergy Awareness meeting. The girls learned about food allergies, using a combination of FAAN's elementary and teen presentations. They discussed real situations and made up situations involving food allergies, they practiced reading food packaging labels as well as skin care product labels, they practiced using the epi-pen trainers on each other, they created posters and plan to hang them at their Elementary school during Allergy Awareness Week make morning and afternoon school announcements during that week to raise awareness of food allergies.
All of the girls received a Be a PAL Girl Scout- FAAN Patch and Be a PAL Hero certificates. |

Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts Joined together at Scout Day in Maryland
Members from Girl Scout Junior Troop 6663, Daisy Troop 5472 and Boy Scouts Pack 950 from Sterling, Virginia spent the afternoon with other scouts from Maryland and DC at the University of Maryland Scout Day. Part of the afternoon the kids spent doing different crafts, fun cheering activities and got to hang out with the University mascot Testudo. Daisy Troop 1058 Worked Hard and Was Successful at Their First Cookie Booth Sale
Daisy Troop 1058 was very motivated at their first Cookie Booth Sale in Lusby, MD. They girls were very proud to be out selling cookies despite the very windy and cold conditions. Make the Connection- Booz Allen Hamilton February
Girls discovered leadership skills by learning to deal with competition and conflict, recognizing success, and taking/giving directions. They learned about dealing with pressures - peer, school and parents- and used interactive role-play to find out how they work best with others. Mattie Miracle partnered with Girl Scout Troop 3989 to create 101 "Build A Bears" to donate to Georgetown University Hospital Child Life Program. The Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation is dedicated to increasing Osteosarcoma and other pediatric cancer awareness, education, advocacy, research and social support services to children, their families, and medical personnel. University of Maryland Hosted Girl Scout Day
Girls from Junior Troop 5126, Brownie Troop 3459, and Brownie Troop 3643 from Ritchie Park Elementary School in Rockville, Maryland spent part of the afternoon with Testudo, the Terrapin mascot of the University of Maryland. The University hosted Girl Scout Day on February 19th with crafts and a private lesson of the school cheer for girl scouts in the National Capital region. Junior Scouts Hosted a World Thinking Day Event
Junior scouts from Troop 1345 hosted a World Thinking Day event at Little Flower School in Bethesda, MD. This is the 5th year Juniors have planned and presented this festival for the Brownies and Daisies in their sister troops at the school.
The Juniors worked in small groups to present stations representing the Czech Republic, Egypt, the Fiji Islands, France, the Galapagos Islands, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Poland. Cadette Troop 6176 helped the youngest scouts make their travel passports and all 90 scouts were treated to foods, activities and crafts from around the world. Association 54 Girl Scouts Participated in a Legislative Day Program in Richmond, VA
The girls studied various bills prior to attending as arrangements were made to meet with several Delegates and Senators to discuss the various bills. The girls also met with Representatives and learned the legislative process for bills/resolutions, role and responsibility of the General Assembly, and saw a committee in session. They were in both the Senate and House Gallery and were officially recognized during session. In addition, a special tour was arranged for the girls to see the Capitol Building and learn of its history. They are pictured with David Bullova who represents the 37th District in Fairfax County.
