Troop 1135 Brownie Troop 1135 Kayaks on Triadelphia

Troop 1135 spent an afternoon in June learning about Kayak safety.  They earned their PADDLE SAFELY Try-It and then ventured out onto the Triadelphia Reservoir to try their hand at kayaking.  It was a rough road, at first, with kayaks going off in all directions, but the girls quickly learned how to maneuver their kayaks skillfully and a fun time was had by all.  Troop 1135 had kayaked at Winona, last Spring, and they were thrilled that kayaks are now available at Camp Brighton Woods. On June 20th approximately 90 Girl Scouts, who attend Waynewood Elementary School, gathered to present Principal James Meier with both a Certificate of and a Plaque of Appreciation. These awards, approved by the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital (GSCNC), recognized Waynewood for its high degree of service and support to the Girl Scout movement over many years. Troop 5113

Brownie Troop Cleaned Up Local Stream

Brownie troop 5113 from Manassas, VA has been working all year on a journey called WOW, Wonders of Water.  The girls have been exploring and learning how to love and protect the worlds water.  They have taken a pledge to save and protect water as best they can.  As they close out this adventure the girls decided to help clean up a local stream in their area called Neabsco Creek .  With help from Prince William Trails & Streams Coalition they choose to work a section of the creek that runs through Andrew Leitch Park.  Photographer: Suzy Ruth

Troop 4672 With Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisake Troop 4672 Visited Japanese Ambassador

Girl Scout Cadette troop 4672 in Takoma Park made over 1,000 paper cranes as an expression of solidarity for the March 11, 2011 tragedies that struck Japan and presented the cranes to Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisake during a 40-minute visit to the Embassy.  Following the formal ceremony and interviews with Japanese television, the Ambassador invited the girls to join him in further conversation.  Over snacks and drinks, they discussed the rebuilding efforts in Japan, their own experiences in camping and Girl Scouts, and the Ambassador gave each girl a string loop and taught them variations of cat's cradle string games.  Prior to their visit to the embassy, the girls had voted to donate $300 from their troop treasury to Save the Children for their relief efforts for children in Japan.  Photographer: Unknown

Troop 446

Troop Hosted a Girl Scout Field Day About the BP Oil Spill

Junior Troop 446 hosted a Field Day about the BP Oil Spill - One Year Later.  More than 80 Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Girl Scouts attended and cycled through seven stations (click here for more details). The troop also set up a display up with pamphlets/reports on the BP Oil Spill and showed video clips about what different organizations did or are continuing to do during the response/recovery effort. Brownie troop 2325 Girl Scouts Sold Out at Bake Sales

Troop 2686

Girl Scout Sisters

Cadette Troop 2686 of SU 32-1 "sistered" Brownie Troop 5122 throughout the year earning the Bowling, Eco Explorer, and Ready, Set, Go Camping Try-its.  The Cadettes visited several Brownie meetings and led activities and crafts.  To end the year, the Cadettes introduced the Brownies to the fun of camping.  Both troops camped at Brighton Woods where the girls went on a Scavenger hunt, learned about and built habitats, played games, made "Sweet Dreams" bracelets, autographed their camp bags, SWAPed with other Brighton Woods campers, prepared Stone Soup, went on a singing hike, learned about campfire safety, and ate S'Mores!  The girls also earned the "Night Owl" patch.  The Cadettes earned their Silver Award by sharing their experience and love of camping with their sister Brownie troop. Clean up at Claude Moore Colonial Farm

Brownie troop 2325 participated in a Girl Scout CLEAN-UP at the Colonial Farm CLAUDE MOORE in McLean, VA. This year they neutralized the acid at a specific field for the cows. Junior Troop 595

Junior Troop 595 Visited Woodlawn Stables in Mount Vernon, VA to earn their Horse Fan Badge

During the tour of the stables and grounds, they helped and learned how to care for one of their horses named April.  They each had a chance to groom her and learned about the different parts of her saddle and bridle.  Our visit ended as we watched the 50+ horses being called from out in the pasture and seeing them go back to their personal stalls all by themselves. Camp Skills Day

Troop 914 Holds Camp Skills Day for Brownies and Daisies in Service Unit 33-5

Junior Troop 914 from Rockville held a camp skills day for younger girls at Camp Brighton Woods.  Girls from Troops 3355, 1112, and 2886 learned about First Aid, Cooking, Fire Safety and what to pack for a camping trip.  They made personal first aid kits, a box oven for their troop, and toured the campground learning about different kinds of shelters available at the camp.  The day concluded with songs and s'mores around the campfire.   Troop 914 earned their Bronze Awards for all their hard work. African-Am​ericans in Congress Patch

Cadettes from Troop 360 in Gaithersburg (SU 32-5) met and interviewed Congresswoman Donna Edwards at her office in the Cannon House Office Building. This meeting was the  culminating activity for the Cadettes as they pursued the African-American's in Congress Patch.  The girls worked hard to learn about the Congressional Black Caucus and its' impact on our government and world. Daisy and Brownie Troop participated in the GSCNC Zink the Zebra Patch Program

Daisy Troops 3740 and 459 and Brownie Troop 3342 of Ashburn, VA participated in the GSCNC Zink the Zebra Patch Program.  The girls learned to "Think Zink" as they participated in activities which emphasized the importance of understanding, respect, compassion, and acceptance of themselves and others.  As a community project they decorated suncatchers and donated them to Inova Fairfax Children's Hospital.  Photographer Brenda Kearney.

Brownie Troop Worked on Thier Manners Try-It

Brownie Troop 3342 of Ashburn, VA visited Gadsby's Tavern Museum and enjoyed having tea with Martha Washington.  The girls participated in 18th Century Tea customs and learned about clothing of that period.  The girls were working on their Manners Try-It.  Photographer: Brenda Kearney.

Earth Day Clean-Up

Cadette Troop 2686 led their Service Unit, 32-1 of Upper Montgomery County, in an Earth Day Clean-Up. In the morning, the Cadettes, Daisies, and Brownies picked-up trash and recyclables around Lake Marion in Montgomery Village. After a "Green" lunch, the Cadettes were joined by Junior scouts and went deeper into the woods, continuing their efforts to make the world a cleaner and better place! Photos by Christine Collins

Girl Scout Bridge/Fly Up During 2011 Encampment

During the 2011 Service Unit 70-8 Encampment at Camp Crowell in Virginia, seven girls transitioned from Brownie Girl Scouts to Junior Girl Scouts. Members of Troop 6663 and Troop 1978 participated in a beautiful, outdoor ceremony where they talked about what it meant to be a Brownie and what they hope to become as they transition into Juniors.

Girls Got Game - Encampment at Brighton Woods

Service Unit 32-1's recent encampment at Brighton Woods was an awesome experience for all who attended. The theme for their encampment was "Girls Got Game". Girls Earned Their Penny Power Try-It

Brownie troop 766 of Brookeville, MD, visited the Sandy Spring Bank in Olney.  Girls earned their Penny Power Try-It.  They learned about counterfeit money and how to they can tell if it's real or not.  They learned about opening up a bank account. The girls got to see safety deposit boxes and a quick peak of the vault.  They ended the tour with the drive through tellers and got to see the money go up and down the tube to external customers.   After dinner girls brainstormed on "Cookie Dough", what activities do they want to spend (if necessary) for a service project and what activities they wanted to spend as a troop.  Photographer: Julie Mulkey

Local Girl Scouts Celebrate International "World Thinking Day"

Area Girl Scouts took a journey to the other side of the world in February--without ever having to leave Silver Spring.  Their destination: the continent of Africa.  The virtual trip was part of this year's Girl Scout "World Thinking Day." Nearly 400 Scouts, Troop Leaders and parents and took part in the afternoon event, held at The People's Community Baptist Church in Cloverly.  Photographer: Donna Walker

Brownie Troops 81142, 81564 and 81436 Tree Planting for Girl Scout Silver Award
 
To earn her Silver Award, Juliette Cadette Sierra Toms received help from Brownie Troops 81142, 81564 and 81436 to plant several trees.  The project was called "A Shady Place to Play" in hopes that one day the playground they were planting the trees near would have shade when as the trees grow larger.  The Girls planted on April 30th to celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day.  The girls also planted flowers and made terrariums to take home. Service Unit 31-07 100th Anniversary Activity100 Brighton Woods Campers celebrated 100 years of Girl Scouting

Service Unit 31-07 held their annual Spring Encampment at Brighton Woods.  Ten Troops participated, including Daisies through Seniors.  The younger troops held a mini-Olympics in which they played games and ran races.  The older girls taught the younger ones camping skills. The Juniors, Cadettes and Seniors journeyed over to the nearby Triadelphia Reservoir and participated in a lake-based program.  They went fishing and kayaking.  They earned Fishing Badges and Interest Project badges. Girl Scout Troop 479 Hosts Carnival for Shelter Children

The rain didn't stop the Girl Scouts (Junior Troop 479) from creating a delightful carnival at Mondloch House Family Shelter on Saturday, April 2-they simply moved everything indoors! Children from Mondloch House and from Alexandria Community Shelter enjoyed a variety of games, arts & crafts, cupcake decorating, and lots of treats and prizes.  The carnival was planned and all activities were prepared by the girls in the troop, several of whom took leadership as part of their Bronze Award project.  Way to go, Girl Scouts!  Photographer: Carylin Waterval

Troops Helped Make Fleece Blankets For Maddie's Blankets 

Members of Cadette Troop 848 and Brownie Troop 647 of Leesburg, VA joined together with Maddie Pelgrim of Maddie's Blankets to make fleece blankets for Maddie's non-profit organization.  The girls learned about how Maddie's passion became an ongoing effort to donate blankets to animal shelters, homeless shelters, and emergency vehicles to help those in need of comfort. Girl Scouts Helped with Service Unit 51-7's "SOS Save Our Sisters" Japan Disaster Relief Event

Cadettes from Troop 777 in Herndon, VA, led a kendo demonstration and face painting activities at SU 51-7's "SOS Save Our Sisters" Japan Disaster Relief event at Nysmith School in Herndon. Older Girl Scouts also led other activities such as making origami cranes and teaching emergency awareness lessons that allowed Daisies and Brownies to earn the GSCNC Emergency Preparedness Program Patch at the event. Parents from Daisy Troop 4102 baked treats, and other adult volunteers taught girls how to make sushi, exhibited Japanese cultural items, and helped write letters of hope to Japanese schoolchildren. Kennedy Center Vital Voices Awards

Girl Scout Troop 6978 attended the Kennedy Center Vital Voices Awards presentation.

500 young women including 55 from GSCNC were invited to attend the 10th Annual Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards.

Welcome remarks were offered by founder of the NGO, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Masters of ceremonies were actress Sally Fields and editor in chief of Newsweek , Tina Brown. Diane Von Furstenberg among other notables were presenters to seven recipients including Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas.

Girl Scout Troops 4848 and 2543 worked with the C&O Canal Trust and National Park Service  to help clean up the area near Fletcher's Cove in Georgetown. Girl Scouts Raise Water Conservation Awareness

Members of Girl Scout Troop #1867 of Herndon, VA are helping to raise water conservation awareness by participating in the 2011 Artistic Rain Barrel Program.  In support of this program, volunteers decorate rain barrels for placement in public places, where they serve as reminders that using rain barrels improves water quality. All of the girls enjoyed learning about the environment and sharing their heartfelt concern for it.  They hope their artwork will inspire others to join in their vision of a future that includes a healthy Chesapeake Bay in a verdant watershed. Girl Scouts Host "A Day of Magic" For Foster Children at Personal Ponies 

Girl Scout Troop 3603 in Clarksburg, Maryland has been working on its bronze award project. The scouts are hosting a day of activities for foster children at Personal Ponies, a shetland pony farm in Barnesville that aims to serve all children with special needs. Wednesday's Child has sent out the word and signed up more than 30 children, ages 2 and up, to participate in the event in May. The scouts have been planning the activities and sewing pony treat bags and knapsacks for the scouts, building an obstacle course, testing out pony treat recipes, and more. And they'll be making sure the foster children have "A Day of Magic." Photographer: Unknown

Juniors Host a Try It workshop for Daisy's and Brownies

The four fifth graders from Troop 360 in Gaithersburg, MD completed their Bronze Award by planning, preparing, organizing and carrying out a Try It workshop for 14 Daisy's and Brownies. The Juniors had the younger girls rotate through stations to earn the Music Makers, Earth and Sky, GirlSports and Wave the Flag Try It's.

Girl Scouts Enjoyed a Tour of the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum's Gem and Mineral Hall

Cadette Troop 2686 of Gaithersburg enjoyed a behind-the-scene tour to the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum's Gem and Mineral Hall.  The girls learned about the various gems at the museum, got to try-on some of the beautiful jewelry, and were allowed to tour the vault!  The girls attending are working on their Museum Discovery Interest Project Patch.  Photograph by Ann Post.

Soldiers Received Holiday Stockings from Troop 1346

Troop 1346 of Haymarket, VA made and sent a Unit fighting in Afghanistan a box with 24 stockings filled with holiday music cds, candy, ornaments, cards, snacks, holiday movies, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Girl Scouts and Community Members Welcome Home Marine

Marine Corporal Josh Himan was critically injured in September 2009 in Hellmund Province, Afghanistan and as a result, he is paralyzed from the chest down.  Corporal Himan has most recently been receiving outpatient treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.  The Woodbridge Community in Prince William County gave a Grand Welcome Home to Marine Corporal Josh Himan in April 2011. Troop 944 (Service Unit 80-9) in Woodbridge, VA. were cheering him on, waving American Flags and throwing kisses as thanks for his service to our Country. Photographer: Melanie Ochalek Novy

DC Cupcakes

Troop #3433 enjoyed watching DC Cupcakes on Friday night which featured a Girl Scout Cookie College episode. Local Girl Scouts partnered with Georgetown Cupcakes owners who helped Girl Scouts earn their baking badges. Georgetown Cupcakes are baking and selling a Girl Scout Thin Mint Cupcake that can be purchased from April 1 - 31 at their stores. 100 percent of the proceeds of the Girl Scout Thin Mint Cupcake go to the council during the month of April. Girl Scout Troop 5127 Participated in NIH Disaster Information Outreach Symposium

Girl Scout Troop 5127 was invited by the National Institutes of Health to be an exhibitor at the Disaster Information Outreach Symposium reception.  The event featured exhibits and representatives from community organizations that provide disaster preparedness and response training for their members or communities.  Attendees visited Troop 5127's booth where they viewed a public service announcement, obtained literature on the Emergency Preparedness Patch program, and talked with Troop 5127 members about their individual experiences and perspectives on emergency preparedness.
