Cadette Troop 2053 of Hughesville, MD attended the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Baltimore-Washington Section “Making It Matter” Engineering event held in Alexandria, VA in January 2012.  Girls experience fun experiments in the engineering field of civil, mechanical, chemical and electrical. Service Unit 10-4 Service Unit 10-4 December Fun

Service Unit 10-4 spruced up their monthly SU Meeting with a little holiday cheer.  The Service Unit held their December meeting at the Cafritz Lodge, Camp Winona in Hughesville, MD.  The members decorated the lodge with a small tree, stocking on the mantle, a warm fire and lots of delicious foods to share.  Members also participated in a gift exchange of sort.  Fun was had by all! Service Unit 10-4 Girl Scouts Organized Service Unit 10-4's World Thinking Day

Girl Scout Daisy Troop 6307, Brownie Troop 3150 and Junior Troop 487 hosted their Service Unit 10-4, Charles County. World Thinking Day event at St. Peter’s School in Waldorf, MD.  Cadette Troop 2053 served as volunteers and Girl Guides.  Girl Scouts moved from country-to-country learning about other Girl Scouts,  traditions, native foods and games played in other parts of the world such as Ghana, Mexico, Japan, Russia, Scotland, Puerto Rico, Italy, Brazil,  Australia and India.  One hundred sixteen girls participated in this World Thinking Day Event.  Admission fees were collected and will be donated to the WAGGGS World Thinking Day Fund. Troop 5881 Girl Scouts Explored Historical Teen Uniform Program Kit

Teen Troop 5881 of Lorton, VA wanted to DISCOVER more about the Girl Scout uniforms of the past.  They checked out GSCNC’s Historical Teen Uniform Program Kit.  The girls had a ton of fun CONNECTING with teen Girl Scouts from previous years by looking at their uniforms.  They decided to TAKE ACTION and conducted two fashion shows for a total of five troops ranging from Daisies to Juniors.  Afterwards, they even had an opportunity to sit down with the Junior troop to work on Bridging badges. Troop 384 Troop 384 in New York City

Troop 384 Seniors and Ambassadors went to New York City to see Lion King and visit the Girl Scout Headquarters for GSUSA. At the headquarters, they went to the archives, the permanent exhibit and spent some time with in Global offices learning about girl scouts abroad...and got their apple patches!  They also  went to St Paul's Church and to the 9/11 Memorial. Association 70 Singalong 100th Anniversary ActivityAssociation 70 Sing-Along

Association 70 kicked off a year long celebration of the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting by having a Girl Scout Reunion Sing-Along at Ida Lee Park.  All Loudoun County Girl Scouts past and present were welcome to bring a picnic and sing. The festivities ran for two hours in the afternoon in Leesburg, VA. Participants had a wonderful time!  Submitted by Diana Kane

Junior-Cadette troop Spent Some Time in the Big Apple

Junior-Cadette troop 2782 from Silver Spring went to New York last May.  The girls used cookie earnings plus a few car washes to fund the trip.  They went to a broadway show called Wonderland, A New Alice.  They also went to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and stopped by ground zero to pay their respects  and did a little shopping in Times Square. A Senior Girl Scout from Troop 2659 and an Ambassador Scout from Troop 2879 with King Peggy Two Girl Scouts Met King Peggy

Two GSCNC Girl Scouts were invited to attend a private dinner featuring King Peggy of Otuam, Ghana and Eleanor Herman of McLean, VA, co-authors of King Peggy being released later this month.  A Senior Scout from Troop 2659 and an Ambassador Scout from Troop 2879 have been working on their Gold Award Projects.  The Ambassador Scout from Troop 2879, completed her Gold Award Project and was assembling Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPI) a simple, non-mercury, reusable thermometer that indicates when water has reached pasteurization temperature and is safe to drink.  She has held several community events to educate children about clean water in Africa.  The Senior Girl Scout will be an Ambassador soon and is looking to help King Peggy's village with technology.  She was hoping to get laptop computers donated so that she could work with Langley High School's computer club to configure them for the school in Otuam.  The Otuam villagers speak English and have resources to maintain the technology, but getting the laptop devices is the hard part.  Submitted by: Pam Gilbert

Troop 282 Cadettes Attended Three Prince Charmings at the Industrial Strength Theater

Girl Scout Troop 282 of Springfield, VA attended the play, Three Prince Charmings, at the Industrial Strength Theater in Herndon, VA on February 4th.  The show included twists on traditional tales, starring Prince Charming, Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, as well as several witches and other characters.  The cast signed autographs for the audience and posed for photos after the show. Cadette Troop 2686 Girls Night Out

Cadette Troop 2686 of Service Unit 32-1 had a girls night out at a local Japanese restaurant. The girls are working on the new "The Gift of Trees" patch program.  Sushi and other Japanese foods were enjoyed as the girls took the "Chopstick Challenge" learning chopstick etiquette and "mastering" their technique using chopsticks with their meal instead of silverware.   Photographer:  Christine Collins

Troop 5958 Troop 5958 Visited the Embassy of United Arab Emirates

A Girl Scout from Troop 5958 and her mother (their advisor) are moving to Dubai.   Troop 5958 arranged a trip to the Embassy of Arab Emirates in order for their troop to learn more about the country.  They had a fascinating tour of the Embassy, met with a professor of Political Science to learn about the history and politics of the country, watched a movie on its astounding 40 year growth and the girls were able to ask any questions about the adventures their friends have in store for them. submitted by: Lisa McGrail

SU 51-7 100th Anniversary ActivityHerndon Girl Scouts Honored the 100th with 100 Blanket Drive for Local Shelter

In honor of the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary, troops from Service Unit 51-7 launched the “Spread the Warmth: Girl Scout 100 Blanket Drive” in December support of Reston Interfaith’s Embry Rucker Shelter. At a December meeting, Girl Scouts brought in the blankets, linens, towels and pillows they collected; created Thank You cards for donors; created flyers for collection bags; decorated cards for Operation Smile; listened to a presentation by Reston Interfaith on other volunteer opportunities; and bagged the blankets and linens, and placed them in Reston Interfaith’s van. Thanks to the girls' donations, as well as donations from Herndon Patch and Reston Patch readers, SU 51-7 reached its goal of 100 blankets in December. Submitted by: Therese Howe 

Troop 1225 Brownie Troop 1225 First Aid

Brownie Troop 1225 of SU 54-16 Fairfax, Leaders Kristin Kelley and Pat Moran, earned their First Aid Badge at a troop meeting recently.  They had a great time role playing First Aid responses.  Bandaging each other was definitely a highlight!  They came away feeling better about what to do in an emergency, how to properly call 911, and how to do a Site Safety Checklist wherever they gather! Association 32 Junior Scouts from Association 32 Earned their aMuse Journey Award

Fifty Junior Scouts from Association 32 earned their aMuse Journey Award at Brighton Lodge on January 15th and now are ready to Take Action to earn their Bronze Award!  Cadette Amber Lafond of Troop 2686 led the workshop.  Teen helpers included Beza Kidane (Troop 401), Katie Crocker (Troop 2796), Abbie Lafond (Troop 2686), and Haley Lennon (Troop 2686).  Cadettes from Troop 2686 are using the proceeds from this event to travel to Savannah over Spring Break 2012. Brownie troops from SU 70-5 Wegmans Veggie Patch Class

Brownie troops from SU 70-5 participated in the Wegmans Veggie Patch cooking class.  The girls toured the produce department and received tips on nutrition and making healthier food choices. All girls participated in food preparation and learned the importance of hand washing and food safety.   Some new foods were introduced to the girls and after a little coaxing, the girls discovered that the spaghetti squash wasn't so bad after all!  Each Brownie received a Wegmans Veggie Patch and a class handout containing recipes and lesson reinforcement activities.  Photographer: Brenda Kearney

Troop 3643 Troop 3643 Cooked Dinner for 20

Troop #3643 of Rockville, MD did a community service event on Sunday, January 8.  They cooked a delicious hot and healthy meal for twenty residents of the Dorothy Day Place in Rockville, MD - a transitional shelter for women.  Faith United Church in Rockville was generous enough to let the troop use their industrial kitchen for the meal prep.
