Troop Sponsors Needy Family During Holidays
Junior troop 6792 elected to sponsor a needy family (selected by the Department of Family Services under the Nurturing Parenting Program) for the holidays. They organized a bake sale at their school's music concert and collected additional funds to purchase gifts for a needy family of 4. They purchased gifts for all the family members and also included gave a gift card to Walmart to buy all the needed things for the holidays. Submitted by Jyothika Valluru |

Girl Scout Troop 2049 Cooks Dinner for Fairfax County Nuturing Families
Girls Scout Cadette Troop 2049 raised money by holding a parent night out babysitting evening at Church Hill Road Elementary school. The profits were used to pay for the food that provided dinner for families who attended Fairfax County Nurturing Families9. The girls prepared dinner for 40 at Fairfax United Methodist Church. Girl Scouts Attend the United Planning Organization's Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast
GSCNC members, including our two teen board members and a DC junior girl scout, enjoyed a lively and educational Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast on January 14 hosted by the United Planning Organization. Pictured are girl scouts with DC Mayor Gray. Speaker themes included investing in the future of our youth and spreading community service and your passions to do good. Sun Safety Slogans
Junior Troop 5126 from Potomac, Maryland came up with creative sun safety slogans while working on the Environmental Health Badge after trying on protective headware (hats that cover the head, ears and neck), sunglasses and longer sleeved shirts for days when they are outside in the sunshine - think Rock the Mall in June!!!. They also talked about water conservation, the environmental triggers of asthma, and foods that help to prevent lead absorption (those high in iron and calcium). Centennial Snowflake Ball
A Centennial Ball for Girl Scouts and their favorite Prince was held by Service Unit 70 in Leesburg. Troop 3342 of Ashburn, VA donned their ball gowns and dancing shoes to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts with other Girl Scouts from across Loudoun County. All attendees enjoyed the chocolate fountain and danced to music provided by the DJ. Fun was had by all and lots of memories were made as they celebrated the Centennial. Cadette Troop 2053 Hosts Swim with Santa Event
Troop 2053 from Hughesville, MD earned their Girl Scout Cadette Service to Girl Scouting bar. Hosting their Service Unit 10-4s December Swim with Santa event. The Cadettes spent countless hours planning, shopping and entertained approximately 80 registered Girl Scouts and 20 Adult Volunteers from their SU in Charles County. As part of the event the Charles County Dive & Rescue Team dressed as Santa posing for underwater photos with girls. In addition to underwater photos with Santa, girls wrote Letters to Santa, made Christmas ornaments, played Christmas “Minute to Win It” games and listen to Christmas music. SU 33-6 Troop 5620 helped two families who requested their help with food during this holiday season through Germantown HELP Holiday Giving Project. Brownies went grocery shopping with their parents, helped select gifts for the children in these families, and delivered the holiday meals and the presents.

Successful Food Drive
Cadette Troop 282 from Springfield, VA, was one of several troops that supported a community food drive in early December, collecting over 2,100 lbs of food for the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC). Troop 282 completed their shift by loading the food in the LCAC box truck, following the truck to the pantry, and unloading all 2,100 lbs from the truck into the pantry! Christmas at Mt Vernon
Girl Scout troop 3342 of Ashburn, VA toured George Washington's Mt. Vernon Estate for "Christmas at Mt. Vernon". The girls enjoyed themed decorations, a gingerbread replica of the Mansion, chocolate making demonstrations, a wreath laying ceremony at Washington's tomb, and enjoyed a rare opportunity to tour the third floor of the Mansion. All Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Camp Fire Club members, in uniform or wearing an official pin, are admitted FREE to the Estate during Scouting days from November 1st through February 19th. Book Wrap, Cookie Exchange, and Sing-a-long
Service Unit 56-3 annual Book Wrap, Cookie Exchange, and Sing-a-long hosted by Senior Girl Scout Troop 5180 in Centreville, VA. Approximately 130 girls from SU 56-3 attended the event and collected and wrapped 234 books to donate to FACETS, an organization that helps those in need in Fairfax County, VA. In addition to exchanging cookies and singing holiday songs, the girls collected travel size toiletries and wrote over 100 holiday cards to send to US Troops serving our country. Cadettes from Springfield, VA Troop 282 participated in the Pink Hair for Hope campaign. Participating salons provide pink hair extensions to individuals, benefiting the Susan G. Komen foundation. Troop 542 at Camp Aquasco
On November 20th Troop 542 continued a long tradition of camp maintenance at Camp Aquasco. This time their efforts were directed to replacement of the camp sign. It was a past and present Troop 542 effort. A Troop 542 Alumni, and Gold Award recipient designed and painted the sign, and the current troop members under took the task of replacing a broken post and mounting the new sign. Juliette Low's Birthday Honored in the Trees
Cadette Troop 518 decided to honor Juliette Low on her birthday with a high adventure activity. The girls climbed up on elevated platforms and crossed various challenging bridges through the trees, including zip lines. They felt that this was a good way to celebrate Daisy's birthday because she did adventures and opened opportunities for girls to do things they have never done before. Troop 81774 went camping 28-30 October 2011 at Camp Greentop in Catoctin Mountain National Park in northern Frederick County, Maryland, where they received a foot of snow. Cadette troop 1424 spent 2 nights on the Chesapeake Bay earning their From Shore to Sea IP badge by touring the University of Maryland’s Chesapeake Biological Center for Research, and visiting Flag Ponds Nature Center. Chesapeake Children's Museum's Underground Railroad Overnight
Troop 1273 participated in the Chesapeake Children's Museum's Underground Railroad overnight. After spending the afternoon exploring Annapolis, they traveled through the woods following Harriet Tubman on their road to freedom, learned the secret of the quilt patterns and songs, found refuge at the Quaker house, and learned tons along the way. They finished off the night writing about their flight to freedom in their journals and talking about women leaders. They even made their chaperones into leaders to introduce to the group. Sow What Take Action Project
Senior Scouts from Troop 384 in Springfield VA did a container garden for their Take Action Project for their Sow What? Journey. The girls prepared the container by researching the soil and types of vegetables to grow. They made a schedule and took turns watering, weeding, repairing the deer fence and harvesting over the summer. The girls donated the vegetables each week to the Church where they meet, for them to use in their ministries including Rising Hope.
