Camp May Flather

Camp May Flather is a 45 acre facility located in the George Washington National Forest-Dry River District bordering West Virginia. It is located south of Harrisonburg in Mt. Solon, Virginia and Augusta County approximately 150 miles from Washington, DC. The grounds are ideally suited to both large group and troop camping. This camp offers rich history in addition to a beautiful setting. The camp, named after May Flather, a friend of Lou Henry Hoover (Mrs.. Herbert Hoover), has been enjoyed by Girl Scouts since it was built in the 1930's. The site features the dramatic, massive Stone Lodge, one of the original structures, and a large dining hall opening onto a spacious, grassy area that can be used for field games and flag ceremonies.

Program Opportunities

On-site activities include hiking, nature walks, exploring the North River, backpacking in the National Forest, field games, primitive camping and a Challenge Course. All Challenge Course activities require properly certified GSCNC personnel (refer to Camping Serves Manager and Safety-Wise.)

Features

This camp is situated on both hilly and level terrain. It offers a wide variety of vegetation and includes forest trees of pine, oak and laurel and is a beautiful setting for a camp. Forest Service Land surrounding the camp is available for multiple use, so it is best to check with the Caretaker or Camping Serves Manager regarding the hunting seasons.

Water Sources

There are several year-round water sources. They are at Stone Lodge in the center of the driveway, at Sherando cook shelter, at Frontier, dining hall, and Staff House. There are additional sources of water available in every unit for use until mid-October or until water freezes.

Telephone

The camp telephones are located in the Health Center and Staff House.
