CAMP WINONA
The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital is pleased to announce
the opening of its fourth resident camp, Camp Winona, for the summer of
2008. Camp Winona is a 178-acre camp near Hughesville, MD. With many brand
new facilities- including a new dining hall, swimming pool, health center,
living units, and even flush toilets- Camp Winona promises to be a popular
place for girls. This camp will serve approximately 75 girls entering
1st through 12th grade in half- and one-week programs from mid-June through
early August.
CAMP PROGRAM
While camp program is new for 2008, most programs will focus on general
outdoor to arts and crafts and nature. Some specialized programs will
also be available. The zero-entry pool is sure to be a hit, including
Trefoil Pond- a small lake available for canoeing and exploring.
FACILITIES
Living Units, each accommodating 15-24 campers, consist of a unit house
or shelter, flush toilets, washstand, fire circle, and glen shelters.
Campers and staff live in glen shelters. A glen shelter is a wood structure
with four sides, a wooden floor and wooden roof. They have canvas curtains
that can be closed in inclement weather. Each sleeps 4-6 campers; staff
members stay in a separate shelter in the unit. Cots, mattresses and mosquito
netting are provided.
Additional facilities include a dining hall and kitchen, camp office,
health center, arts and crafts building, trading post, shower house, staff
building (for breaks) and a swimming pool.
LOCAL FEATURES
Camp Winona is located less than an hour southeast of Washington, DC.
With many museums to visit and special places to see, DC is a great place
to spend your weekends that you'll have off. There are also many sites
