Holiday Project
The Girl Scouts who participated in the Holiday Project event were so well-behaved and the adult volunteers were very organized! The girls visited with approximately 200 patients at the local nursing home. We would welcome the opportunity to work with this group again.

National Trails Day at President's Park
The Girl Scouts who participated in the National Trails Weekend event
did an excellent job of helping President's Park maintain its South
Trail, located on the Ellipse in the shadow of the White House. They
trimmed, weeded, mulched, swept under benches, and picked up trash.
Everyone commented on their enthusiasm, dedication and hard work. The
park looked so much better for their efforts. The Girl Scouts were also
taken on a "Walking Tour Through History" and were able to
discover some of the most important people, places and events that have
shaped this nation. Girl Scouts not only helped preserve the areas around
our historic landmarks, but learned about their history.

Reach Out and Read ®
During the 2005-2006 school year, Girl Scout Troops in Northern Virginia
collected approximately 3,587 gently used children's books and donated
them to the Reach Out and Read® program of Inova Fairfax Hospital
for Children (IFHC)! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all
of the troops who participated in service projects to benefit our program
during the past school year: Brownie Troop 1332, Brownie Troop 3339,
Brownie Troop 4911, Junior Troop 776, Junior Troop 656, Junior Troop
5544, Junior Troop 2066, Junior Troop 3040, Junior Troop 2084 and Junior
Troop 3970.
Our Reach Out and Read program also benefited from special service
projects by various Girl Scout Troops. Girls from Troop 5544 donated
plastic Easter eggs and stuffed them with reading stickers that were
distributed at our clinic and at the Pediatric Emergency Department
at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. Brownie Troop 4911 donated two
Build-A-Bears dressed as doctors and nurses for our patients and also
purchased $250 worth of books from their hard earned "cookie money."
Girls from Troop 3040 and 2084 made thirty tote bags on the sewing machine
for our patients to use to carry books home with them from their visit
to the doctor.
One Girl Scout, Kaylan Celestin, received her Silver Award based on
a project she did with the Fairfax County Public Library and our program.
Kaylan conducted a used book drive and donated 539 books to our program.
We applaud the effort of all the Girl Scouts who have supported our
program during the past year! You can indeed be proud of the level of
Community Service that the Girl Scouts have provided to Reach Out and
Read at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.

Harvest for the Hungry
The great "All Stars Harvest" on 10/1/2005 had 419 registered
Girl Scouts from 54 troops representing 17 service units council-wide.
They picked 14,315 lbs. of potatoes & tomatoes, setting a new single-day
harvest record at USDA. Thank you for your continuing support!
