"It Takes a Village"

Marie Johns with a Girl Scout at Camp CEO

Washington, D.C. is a remarkable place; rich in cultural resources, creativity and brain power with a stable workforce.  Despite this rosy picture, some in the District face an uncertain future.  These are our young people, our sons and daughters.  In the District teenage pregnancy rates exceed neighboring communities, only 58 percent of children are expected to graduate from high school and 63 percent of female-led households live in poverty.

We can turn the tide of failure and stand up for our children.  Let's embrace the African proverb "It takes a village" and expand our sense of family responsibility.  Girl Scouts creates an accepting and nurturing environment to help girls build character and the skills needed to succeed in the world. Become a Girl Scout leader and help girls in your community discover fun, friendship and the power of girls together!

I invite you to join forces with one of the best organizations dedicated to girls, Girl Scouts. The Girl Scout's new campaign, "Change Begins by Helping a Girl" is reaching out to our churches in the District and Prince George's County to increase volunteers and troop leaders.  Let's help nurture girls so that they have a chance to participate in the American dream. Volunteer today-It takes a village!
