Money Skillz: Capital Currency Workshop

Girl Scout Game Day - Howard UniversityFor: Girl Scouts of all ages

When: January 29 

Where: Howard University, Washington, DC 

GSCNC is partnering with Howard University Women's Basketball Team to offer a special Girl Scout Game Day.  Tickets for the Girl Scout Game day are just $2 for the first 200 tickets and then they become just $5.  During the game there will be free giveaways, an autograph session with the players and much more.  Tickets are open to not just the girls but to families and friends too. 

Cost: $2 for the first 200 tickets, $5 after that

Climbing Day at Camp May Flather

A fun day of rock climbing awaits you!  Try out the climbing wall and natural rock wall at Camp May Flather.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day
 

with AU Women's Basketball

For: Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes

Where: American University Bender Arena, 4400 Massachusetts Ave NW Washington, DC 20016

When: Saturday, February 5th, 2011. Game at 2:00 p.m. and Clinic at about 4:00 p.m. 

Following a Women's Basketball game, all AU female sports teams will be hosting a FREE skills clinic and autographs session. Meet and greet with AU student-athletes and get autographs while trying out your hand at basketball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, swimming, diving, track and field, cheerleading, dance and more! Post-Game Skills Clinic & Autograph Session will begin immediately following the basketball game.

Cost: Skills Clinic is FREE. Admission to the game for scouts is $2/ticket.

Becoming Your Own Heroine: Lessons in Self-Empowerment & Dating Violence

For: Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors

Where: Howard University Blackburn Center, 2400 6th St NW Washington, DC

When: Saturday, February 19th, 2011, 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

This program will focus on building self-esteem and empowerment while addressing conflict resolution, healthy relationships, and dating violence for Girl Scouts 9-18 years old. We will incorporate arts, music, theater, and dance to address self-expression and pertinent issues while also teaching the girls what their rights are - both mentally and physically, through a self-defense demonstration and lesson.

Cost: This is a FREE event

When: Sunday, January 23 at 4:00 p.m.


The Girl Scout event will be hosted by the Terps' fearless mascot, Testudo, and the Maryland Spirit Squad. The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will conclude just before the Terps tip-off at 5:00 p.m. Girl Scouts will make props for the game to show off during halftime. Girl Scouts will be invited to center court to greet the Maryland Women's Basketball team when the Terps enter the arena to begin the second half.

Join Rendevous Social Dance and Fitness to learn basic partner dances from around the world. Girls learn a variety of dances like swing, foxtrot, waltz, and salsa, while younger girls explore expression through movement. Programs are available for Brownies as well as for Juniors and Cadettes.

Author Peggy Orenstein Hosting Book Event

Join Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter, for a book signing event at Borders Books store in Baileys Crossroads, Virginia on Thursday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m.  In Cinderella Ate My Daughter, Orenstein explores potential implications of the growing "girlie-girl" culture amongst America's young girls.  The book examines several causes - ranging from movie characters to American Girl dolls - and theorizes what these extreme feminine influences could mean for our nation's girls. Peggy Orenstein is also the author of the best-selling memoir, Waiting for Daisy.   She lives in the San Francisco Bay area with her husband and daughter.

What's a Dine-Around? Dine-Arounds are informal dinners, brunches, teas or other events that are hosted by Women's Advisory Board members at their homes or businesses.  They are a unique chance to gain insight from successful women and will prove to be an amazing networking session.

 APEC Volunteers Needed
 

 Junior and Senior Girl Scout volunteers are needed for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Senior Officials Meeting. The Girl Scouts will act as ID checkers for meeting, runners/escorts (helping delegates find meeting locations) and assist at the welcome desk.

The meeting runs February 27 through March 13 at the Ronald Reagan and International Trade Center - 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20004. 

APEC is the premier economic organization in the region, comprising 21 member-economies from both sides of the Pacific.  APEC's core mission is to strengthen economic integration in the Asia-Pacific by removing barriers to trade and investment. Find out more about APEC by visiting www.apec.org

ARTLAB+ Digital Design Studio for Teens by Hirshhorn

For: Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors

Where: Hirshhorn Museum, Independence Ave and 7th St SW, Washington, DC

When: Programs run from January 24 - May 27, 2011
 
This spring, the museum is offering free workshops where teens work closely with museum staff and artists to discover the intersections of art and technology. These workshops are called ARTLAB+ and treat teens as designers who explore art in the museum and around D.C. before they create short films, photo series, animations, podcasts, and more. All programs are free and Saturday programs include lunch.

Girl Scout Engineering Day at UMD

This spring, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts will work on engineering activities to earn the Building a Better Future project patch. Registration Deadline: January 12th, 2011

Registration is conducted on a first come, first serve basis until all available spaces are full. Submit your registration form as soon as possible to secure your place in the February program.

Please note that we can only accept up to five participants per troop at this time.

Cost: $10 per participant (covers lunch and the cost of patches) Please do NOT include this fee with your registration form; we will request the fee after your scouts have been accepted into the program.

Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop

Where: Audubon Naturalist Society's Woodend Sanctuary, 8940 Jones Mill Rd, Chevy Chase, MD

The free Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop will introduce leaders to the seven principles of reducing their Girl Scout Troop's impact on nature when recreating outside. The leaders will learn how they can apply the principles to their Girl Scout activities and engage the girls in the troop in conversation and activities to think about people's impact on their environment. Leaders will take home activities ideas to integrate either at their next troop meeting or on their next outdoor excursion.

Earn basic low ropes certification that enables you to teach your troop or group!  Courses are available at our camps for certified adults.  This two-day class includes lodge facilities to stay overnight if needed.
