GSCNC's Light Bulb Challenge
January 1 - April 1, 2010
GSCNC is kicking off the new year on a green note with the council-wide Light Bulb Challenge, running from January 1 - April 1, 2010. The challenge encourages Girl Scouts and volunteers to change at least one incandescent bulb to a CFL (compact fluorescent light) or LED (light emitting diode). This change not only saves money, but also reduces carbon footprints. The Light Bulb Challenge is an extension of our Girl Scouts Forever Green Community Action Project. The Association with the most change will be honored at the 2010 Annual Meeting AND Eco-Expo!
For more information on the Light Bulb Challenge, visit: http://www.gscnc.org/lightbulbchallenge.html
The Light Bulb Challenge is generously sponsored by Pepco.

Journey Fact of the Week

From Junior Journey "Get Moving"
Did you know that the first plastic grocery bag was invented in 1977? For the last 33 years, people have been using this handy tote then throwing them away. Unfortunately, no one knows how long they take to decompose, but scientists speculate it will be between 500 - 1000 years before they do. Many of these bags do not end up in landfills either, but instead in oceans and streams where they kill wildlife and change the eco-system forever. Many places have stopped using plastic bags, and impose a tax if you don't have a reusable shopping bag. You can even turn old plastic bags into reusable shopping bags - a way of recycling! For patterns and more green crafts, visit: http://www.myrecycledbags.com/. Next time someone asks "paper or plastic?" Say PAPER if you don't have a reusable!
Find out more fun environmental information and follow the adventure of Dez, the fashionista spider, in the second Junior Journey, "Get Moving." Leaders, don't forget to purchase the leader guide, which includes detailed sample sessions to help you lead girls through the Junior Journey. Journeys are a core piece of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and help girls Discover, Connect and Take Action.

Will our council event still happen if it snows? GSCNC's Snow Policy for Girl Program Events
With winter programming going on during a season that has already seen snow twice, please review council's policy on programs and inclement weather:
For Council Programs (programs run by council staff or REACH member):
GSCNC's program cancellations typically follow the public school closure of the county where the program is located. When possible, for weekend programs, we will make the call by the close of business on Friday as to whether the program will be cancelled. If the program is cancelled, we will send an email to the address listed in the program registration.
You will also be able to call the general program number at 202-274-2170 on Friday for a status update. We will take into consideration the weather forecasts for the entire region as well as the decision of the county to make our decision.
If the program is held as scheduled but you are unable to safely travel to the program because of the weather conditions in your area, please stay home; your safety is our number one priority. While refunds are not offered to those who are no-shows to events, we may be able to make accommodations due to the disparity in local weather conditions throughout our region.
For Program Partner/Vendor Programs (programs run by partners/vendors):
Please contact the Program Partner to inquire about their cancellation policies. Many of them will post information on their website; you can find website, email and telephone contact information on our Program Partner pages online, here: http://www.gscnc.org/program_partners.html.
If the partner program was registered through the council registration site, you should contact the vendor first. Refund policy for council registered programs run by partners/vendors will remain the same as council-run programs. If the event is cancelled, we will refund you. If the event is not cancelled, and you choose not to go, refunds may be accommodated.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Program Department at the main office in Washington, DC.
