GSCNC girls have changed 389 incandescent light bulbs and we're not done yet!  339 CFLs and 50 LEDs have taken the place of incandescent bulbs in our council.  Our goal is to have every girl change at least one bulb before April 1st.  The Association that changes the most light bulbs will be recognized at the 2010 Annual Meeting and Eco-Expo, so let us know how many YOU have changed!

Journey Fact of the Week

From the NEW Senior Journey - SOW WHAT?

Did you know that wheat covers more of the Earth's surface than any other crop?  Wheat covers about 500 million acres of our Blue Planet right now. The most common use is to grind wheat into flour then turn it into bread which feeds more than 1 billion of the world's poorest citizens. However, over the next century, up to 50% of wheat-growing areas are expected to face drought risks from climate change.

Find out more fun environmental information and create your own adventurous Journey with "Sow What."  Leaders, don't forget to purchase the leader guide, which includes detailed sample sessions to help you lead girls through the Senior Journey. Journeys are a core piece of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and help girls Discover, Connect and Take Action.

World Thinking Day Resources
World Thinking Day 2010, Monday, February 22, 2010

World Thinking Day 2010 is a great opportunity to do some global education and advocacy!  For troops/service units looking to put on a World Thinking Day event in February, check out some great resources offered through the Meridian International Center, located in Washington DC.

Troops can check out Culture Boxes, free of charge, which contain activities and materials pertaining to a specific country/culture.  See the list available here.

Troops can also invite an International Classrooms Cultural Consultant to present to them about their culture/country.  Presentations do normally cost $100, but prices are negotiable depending on resources available to troops.  Most Consultants are based in the metro DC area, so travel may be an issue.   See list of Consultants and more information here.

Email Katie Appel at kappel@meridian.org to check out a Culture Box and/or reserve a Cultural Consultant.
