On Staten Island, the Fresh Kills landfill was open for about 50 years until the 1980s. The landfill reached its maximum capacity via barges dropping off approximately 13,000 tons of garbage daily. With limited space to open new landfills and opposition to building a new incinerator, New York now pays other states to accept most of its trash. Where is the JUSTICE in that? For Girl Scout Juniors The Bat Or award was developed by the National Jewish Girl Scout Committee (http://www.njgsc.org/) especially for Girl Scouts who want to explore their heritage as part of their Girl Scout experience.
