Kraft PatchOn February 10th, 2011, the Girl Scouts teamed up with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Kraft Foods to highlight the importance of healthful eating habits and active lifestyles at a Town Hall in Washington DC. As part of this, the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana prepared nutritious after-school snack recipes with Kraft Foods and elected their favorite recipe.

Join Girl Scouts Forever Green
by doing your own green

Who: Girl Scouts of All Ages

When: Accepting applications now through March 31

Are you or your troop planning a green Take Action project? Are you interested in starting a green project this spring?  If so, you can be included in Girl Scouts Forever Green.  The possibilities are endless and include everything from installing energy-efficient light bulbs, to composting lunch food, to creating a green space, and so much more!  Troops or individuals who plan on doing a project will need to submit a proposal form in order to be included.  Information on projects and the proposal form can be found in the Girl Scouts Forever Green booklet, which can be found here.

Mini-grants of up to $150 are available to support your green project.  When submitting a proposal for your project, be sure to include a budget so your project can be considered for a grant.  This will be a rolling application process, so turn in your proposal soon to ensure money is still available. 

Projects must be completed by June 30

Celebrate Girl Scout World Thinking Day with girls from across the council! During this special day that has been part of Girl Scouting since 1926, girls will visit stations highlighting different countries and learn about scouting, games and culture. The international event activities fulfill requirements for four Brownie Try-Its: Dancercize, People of the World, Brownie Girl Scout Around the World and Playing Around the World. More info...  

Cost: $9 per girl and includes materials and a participation fun patch.

 "Surf Creatures" Reading and Zoo Adventure

Who: Girl Scouts of All Ages  

When: Saturday, February 19th 2011, 11:00a.m. - 2:00p.m.

Professional surfer Shaun Tomson will be doing the first ever "eBook reading" of his new iPad book "Surf Creatures" at the Smithsonian National Zoo. Along with the reading Shaun will be answering questions about his ocean adventures and the animals he has encountered, and sharing the stage with Zoo biologist Mike Henley. After the reading they will head over and do a feeding of the Zoo's octopus and meet some of the residents of the invertebrate exhibit. This presentation is open to people of all ages, but is geared towards children three- to nine-years old.

Cost: This is a FREE event.

Her Story Special Event

Who: Girl Scout Brownies

When: Saturday, March 19, 2011

Two sessions:

Session I: 1:30p.m. - 2:40 p.m.

Session II: 3:00p.m. - 4:10 p.m.

Where: The Lyceum: Alexandria's History Museum, 201 South Washington St,Alexandria, VA, 22314

Brownies will participate in hands-on activities and a service project.  They will learn about programs helping women today in our community and talk with a panel of former Girl Scouts and discover how scouting empowered them.  Girls and adults will add their own future goals to a timeline of Juliette Gordon Low's story and participate in a service project helping women. 

Participants will be asked to bring an item to donate to the Alexandria Domestic Violence Safehouse; a list of suggested items will be provided before the event.

Cost: $6

Garden Tea Party 

Who: Girl Scouts of All Ages

When:Sunday, March 27 from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Where: Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens, 4155 Linnean Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20008

In the tradition of Marjorie Merriweather Post's elegant garden parties, Girl Scouts will explore Hillwood's magnificent gardens, putt on the green, play games, try on dress-up clothes, decorate a party dish with garden themes, and create fancy hats. Hillwood patches are available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

Cost: Girl $10, Adult $5, Tagalong $10

Girl Scouts in Georgetown Day

Who: Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors   

When: Saturday, April 16th 

Scouts become nature detectives during interactive tours and hands-on activities at one of Georgetown's most historic houses. Armed with magnifying glasses Scouts explore Tudor Place's 5.5 acres of historic gardens. After the tour, Daisies and Brownies build their own birdhouse and Juniors plant their own flower garden to take home.

The program will fulfill the requirements for the Eco-Explorer Try-It and meet some of the requirements for the Outdoor in the City Badge.

Volunteers needed for Her Story Event

  • Leading groups of Brownies around Lecture hall to "stations" during each program;
  • Assisting presenters as they speak with Brownie Girl Scout groups;
  • Helping with simple hands-on activities;
  • Helping visitors in museum exhibition galleries and other event support.

Dine-Around Series

Are you working toward your Gold Award? Have you already earned your Gold Award? If so, we'd love to have you join us for one of our Dine-Arounds this season.

What's a Dine-Around? Dine-Arounds are informal dinners, brunches, teas or other events that are hosted by Women's Advisory Board members at their homes or businesses.  They are a unique chance to gain insight from successful women and will prove to be an amazing networking session.
