The First Lady's
Challenge to the Girl Scouts

Calling all Girl Scouts! Let's all show Mrs. Obama what girls together can do! Read, exercise and encourage your friends to do it too, then log it in with us and see how much we can do! We'll keep track of how many books you read, and how many hours you exercise - and how often you encourage a friend to do the same.

"Let's Read. Let's Move." seeks to combat childhood obesity and summer reading loss by engaging youth in summer reading and physical activity, as well as by providing access to healthy, affordable food.

This initiative is an Administration-wide effort led by the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with First Lady Michelle Obama and five federal agencies.

Visit www.serve.gov/lrlm.asp for more information.

Journey Fun Fact of the Week

Did you know?
By 1919, almost every state in America had a Girl Scout troop! To date, more than 50 million women have been in Girl Scouts. Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts to aid young women in building self-esteem and teaching values such as courage, honesty, compassion, and good citizenship. Learn more about leadership and advocacy in the Journey "Your Voice/Your World".

Leaders, don't forget to purchase the leader guide, which includes detailed sample sessions to help you lead girls through the Journeys. Journeys are a core piece of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and help girls Discover, Connect and Take Action. For girls working on their Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards, Journeys are the prerequisites to beginning an award project.

Visit the Journey page of the GSCNC website for more information.

To purchase Journeys, visit the Girl Scout shop. For shop information, click here.

Participate in the Global Advocacy Pilot
Two workshops remaining!

GSCNC is offering a global advocacy series designed to teach teen girls about different global issues (connected to the Millennium Development Goals - MDGs) and empower them to take action through advocacy. Each workshop will address different issues connected to global development and need. After the workshops, girls will participate in an advocacy training where they will take what they've learned and utilize the tools of advocacy to make a difference.

The following workshops will be hosted by AED, in their exhibit space next to their headquarters in Dupont Circle - 1875 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20009; corner of Connecticut Avenue and T Street, and sponsored by ITVS:

Thursday, July 29, 5-7:30 p.m.: Health in the Developing World Workshop
Saturday, July 31, 11-3:30 p.m.: Advocacy Training - Learn how to reach out to your Congressperson, write an op-ed, and run a social media campaign around an issue you care about!

While we would love girls to attend all the workshops, we understand busy summer schedules and encourage participation in any of the events. Please contact Kaitlin Hasseler at khasseler@gscnc.org as soon as possible if you would like to attend any of the workshops/training listed above.

Support the Healthy Media for Youth Act
by learning to Grow Strong!

Last Wednesday, eighteen high school Girl Scouts participated in Girl Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill to encourage Congressional support for the Healthy Media for Youth Act. The Healthy Media for Youth Act (H.R. 4925) is a bipartisan bill that promotes healthy media messages about girls and women for the benefit of all youth. Read more about their experience here: Girl Scouts Advocate for Healthy Media - Blog

YOU can be an advocate too. The Grow Strong Teen kit, focused on healthy living, media literacy and self-esteem, offers great tips on how to get informed and then have your voice be heard! To check out a Grow Strong Teen kit, put in a request at: http://www.gscnc.org/kits.html

For any questions about the Grow Strong program, email Kaitlin Hasseler at khasseler@gscnc.org. For questions about the kit check-out process, email Mankaa Ngwa-Suh at mngwasuh@gscnc.org.
