What You Should Know About the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital

Membership

Total membership was 79,401, including 55,392 girls in 4,587 troops and 24,009 adults.

Cookies

4,103,700 boxes were sold in '07.

Program

GSCNC had 75,443 participants in council programs other than camping and the Sing-Along ? an 11.5% increase in participants in GSCNC programs over the previous year.

Gold Awards

183 girls earned the Gold Award.

Camping

47,822 youth and adults participated in camping programs at six GSCNC camps and at public and private campsites throughout the area. This included:

  • 3,198 girls at our three sleep-away camps last summer
  • 2,630 youth at 22 community-based summer day camps
  • 5,883 youth at 32 fee-funded summer day camps

Sing-Along

More than 175,000 Girl Scouts, family members and friends participated in the 95th anniversary Sing-Along on the National Mall on June 9, 2007.

Training

9,768 individuals were trained in classrooms and on-line courses, conferences and workshops by 200 volunteer trainers.

Adult volunteers

Many of council's 24,000 adult members contributed their time and talent to Girl Scouting: 7,044 of them served as troop leaders and co-leaders, and thousands helped with the cookie sale, camps, the SHARE campaign and numerous other activities.

Faith

9 events representing 7 faiths were attended by nearly 350 girls and adults.

Inclusion

Last year, 63 teen Girl Scouts were trained to work with girls with disabilities in troops and camps. Programs are adapted for girls with hearing and visual impairments and all camps are accessible. Our linguistic outreach staff continues to grow, and some council materials are translated to Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and Farsi.

Financial aid

$430,100 went to girls and adults in '07.

Council budget

$12.1 million (income: $12.8 million)

Fund raising

SHARE, council's annual giving campaign, raised $542,551 in '07. Also, $1,021,812 came from foundations, corporations and the District of Columbia Appropriations.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, GSCNC has five satellite offices - Waldorf and Frederick in Maryland and Manassas, Leesburg and Lorton in Virginia.
