Sudden Service

Girl Scout Volunteers for Ceremonial Events and Special Activities

What is Sudden Service?

Each year GSCNC receives requests from local and national organizations and governmental agencies asking for Girl Scouts to participate in important ceremonies or community service events. The Sudden Service program of GSCNC brings Girl Scouts and local organizations together to create memorable occasions. Very often, the requests are made at the last minute and for a specific troop size or age group. Because of the short notice, GSCNC has established the Sudden Service program so that we can respond quickly.

What have the girls done?

In the past, the Girls Scouts have been flag bearers, ushers at special events, race marshals, national anthem singers and much more. The following are recent Sudden Service activities that the girls have been a part of:

  • Presented to President Bush dollar bills for American's Fund for the Afghan Children.
  • Participated in an ecological photo and badge opportunity with EPA’s Christine Todd Whitman and GSUSA.
  • Flag bearers at the grand opening of the 2001 National Urban League conference at the Washington Convention Center.
  • Flag bearers at The White House for a summer T-ball games.
  • Face painters, greeters and coordinators for the National Zoo’s Easter Sunday Festivities.

Frequently asked questions:

Does the troop leader need to be the contact person?

NO — If the troop leader feels she/he is too busy to accept calls and organize the troop for a sudden event, then any parent who can be easily reached can be on the SS form as the contact person.

Does the troop leader need to attend the events offered in the Sudden Service program?

NO — Any willing parent can chaperone the girls to the event.

If a Girl Scout does not have a uniform, can they still sign up for Sudden Service?

YES — This opportunity is open to everyone who is interested. If the event does require a uniform, GSCNC can provide clothes for the occasion.
