Girl Scout Troop Hosted Outdoor Fun/Camp Skills Day
Herndon Troop 1413 earned their Bronze award by planning and hosting an Outdoor Fun/Camp Skills day for Daisies and Brownies and collecting canned goods for LINK. The girls planned and guided 3 stations. First, the Arts & Crafts station where girls created a paper bag puppet using recycled materials, a colorful leaf-rubbing, and each girl received a coloring booklet which included the Girl Scout Law as it was in the 1920’s and the current Girl Scout law. Second, the Fire Safety & Fire Building plus Camp Dishwashing Stations where Daisies and Brownies learned the importance of Fire Safety (Do’s & Don’ts), How to Build a Fire (step-by-step), and ate a snack of an “Edible Fire” where the younger scouts could manipulate different (edible) representations of all the components of a campfire. A demonstration on how to wash dishes at camp took place after snack, each girl was able to take a turn washing a dish. And third, the Games and Relays Station which also incorporated a lesson in how to cooperatively set up a tent. The Daisies & Brownies really enjoyed helping set up pink tents and were able to spend time pretending to camp-out in the tent. The games and relays including having the girls have a dress for the outdoors relay, and a jump rope relay. They also had several other fun games the girls could play, led Brownie Girl Scouts on a nature hike and gave out small treats. Photographer: Ana Graef-Jones
