Our Patch Program

Girl Scout Patch programs provide girls with opportunities to take part in special events to learn new skills, network, and have fun when Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital partners host events. Patches can celebrate a troop activity or completing a program unique to Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital.

Upon completion of the program, girls can purchase the patch from our Shop. Girl Scouts from any Council are welcome to participate and order their patches from our Council Shop.

Camp Patches

Explore Camp Patch Program toggle arrow

The Nation's Capital "Explore Camp” Patch Program encourages Girl Scouts to explore the outdoors, take part in Girl Scout traditions, and discover the unique features of each of our eight camp properties. Girl Scouts completing this patch program will hone their eight basic outdoor skills, which help improve outdoor literacy and support positive, environmentally friendly outdoor experiences. The eight basic outdoor skills are as follows: Outdoor Manners, Be Prepared, Know Your Knots, Outdoor Tools, Fire Building, Outdoor Cooking, Stay Safe, and Find Your Way. A ninth skill, Girl Scout Traditions, accompanies the eight basic skills so girls can experience outdoor camping traditions in Girl Scouting. This program is appropriate for Girl Scouts of all levels, with a primary focus on Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, as well as Girl Scouts with limited camping or outdoor experience.

Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors, and Girl Scouts with more camping or outdoor experience may also complete this program, but are encouraged to not only complete each activity, but to test their skills by completing the optional Challenge Mode variations in some activities or by helping younger Girl Scouts complete the program.

Girls will complete all eighteen activities listed in the program to earn the Explore Camp Main Patch. The first activity from Know Your Knots should be completed first so that girls can add beads to their

bracelets as they complete skills. Otherwise, you may complete activities in any order. Refer to page 27 for an activity checklist that can be used to track each girl's progress.

After earning the main patch, Girl Scouts may earn the other eight patches in this program, each of which focus on one of the eight Nation's Capital camp properties.

The Emergency Preparedness Patch program prepares Girl Scouts to: • Identify local risks and potential emergencies • Connect with local community service agencies • Understand hazards and appropriate protective actions • Learn local alerts and warning systems • Prepare themselves and their family • Deal with emotional responses to an emergency • Discover how to get trained and become involved in community emergency planning • Explore additional resources

The Discover the Nation’s Capital patch program encourages Girl Scouts to explore the rich history of Washington, DC by visiting multiple places throughout the area. The program is appropriate for girls of all levels.

Dark Sky

This patch will help you understand the importance of dark skies and how you can protect this resource. You will learn about light pollution, see the effect of light pollution yourself, learn how you can make changes to reduce light pollution, and share what you have learned with others. The program consists of three categories: Discover, Connect, and Take Action.

FARE

Girl Scouts Nation's Capital has partnered with Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) to offer the Food Allergy Awareness Patch Program. This patch program gives Girl Scouts the opportunity to learn about life with food allergies, a public health issue which impacts 32 million children and adults in the US.

Sun Safety

The world is made possible because of the central star in the solar system - the sun. Its rays keep the Earth warm and help plants grow. But the sun can also be harmful and make you sick.

Thanks to the generous support of The Gendell Family Foundation, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital created the Sun Safety patch program to educate about the sun's unseen-but dangerous-ultraviolet (UV) rays and what you can do to lessen your risk of developing skin cancer. Through completing the activities in this patch program, you will discover, connect and take action to help yourself and others be sun safe.

Sports Awareness

The purpose of this program is to encourage girls to try different sports/activities as potential lifetime leisure activities. While doing the program girls will develop life skills as they practice record keeping, learn team building and cooperation skills, and build their experiences in sports.

The patch and pin for this program are worn on the back of the sash/vest as this is not an official GSUSA program. Patches and pins can only be purchased at our Girl Scout Shops. They are not available online. Please check our website for Shop hours and locations (www.gscnc.org).

Endangered Species

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is to recognize the importance of protecting species from extinction. In earning this patch, you will have an understanding of endangered species, their habitat, and the process of protecting them through the ESA.

International Day of the Girl

In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 11th as International Day of the Girl Child, to “recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face, and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.”

Water Drop Patch Program toggle arrow

The Water Drop Patch Project inspires Girl Scouts to learn about water quality and take action in their communities to protect and restore water resources, including local rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, estuaries, coastal waters, and groundwater. The project supports the Girl Scout Leadership Experience Program by promoting the following goals for Seniors and Ambassadors.
