Global Girl Scouting

As Girl Scouts, we are all members of a global movement that spans 144 countries around the globe! This page lists ways to stay in touch with Girl Guiding around the world. Don’t forget to also visit the website of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts!

World Thinking Day

January 2008 – World Thinking Day is a chance for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to think about their peers in other parts of the world. The World Thinking Day 2007 theme is “Discover your Potential by taking the lead, growing friendships, and speaking out.” World Thinking Day 2007 focuses our attention on these three exciting core aims so that many more girls worldwide can develop leadership skills in a friendly and supportive environment, build their self esteem and take action on issues that affect them. For stories, activities and resources, please visit the World Thinking Day website or GSUSA's Thinking Day website.

World Thinking Day on the Air

January 2008 – World Thinking Day on the Air (TDOTA) is an opportunity for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to cross country boundaries on the airwaves. Organized by Girl Guides in the United Kingdom, girls are encouraged to use amateur radio to talk to each other on a specific weekend in February. This year, girls can participate on February 16-17, 2008. For information on related activities and how to participate, please visit the World Thinking Day on the Air website.

Juliette Low World Friendship Fund

January 2008 – To honor Juliette Gordon Low’s love of travel and celebration of different cultures, Girl Scouts of the USA created the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund (JLWFF) in 1927. The purpose of the fund remains the same – to extend Girl Scouting and Girl Guiding to girls around the world and to support international friendship through service projects, training events and exchange visits. At least 50% of the money collected for JLWFF is used to provide travel opportunities to girls (Destinations travelships, scholarships to WAGGGS events, etc.). The fund also goes toward the WAGGGS World Thinking Day Fund, which helps to develop Girl Scouting and Guiding in other countries, provides disaster relief, generates program training and educational materials.

Donating to JLWFF is a way to impact the lives of girls here and throughout the world. That is why it is one of the few organizations Girl Scouts are allowed to raise funds for. Consider having a donation can at your next Thinking Day, Girl Scout Week or other Girl Scout get together. Consolidate the collected funds and send a single troop check to the main GSCNC office, payable to “GSCNC” with “JLWFF” in the note section. GSCNC consolidates your donations and sends them on to GSUSA. Your donation can help girls develop the international friendships that challenge political, social and other barriers – you can make the world a better place through JLWFF.

100 years of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting

January 2008 – From 2010 to 2012, 10 million girls and young women are invited to join in the celebrations of the birth of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting. The Girl Guiding movement started in the United Kingdom in 1910 and spread to the U.S. in 1912. With such an important birthday for a worldwide movement, it makes sense to celebrate for three whole years. During the three year period from 2010-2012, all of WAGGGS’ activities will come under the banner of the centenary theme. What should those activities be? What is important to girls in 2010? What do girls and young women hope for? What influences the choices they make about their careers and their lives? Tell WAGGGS what girls think and say to help guide our anniversary celebrations: www.wagggsworld.org/en/about/100years.

Pax Lodge

August 2007 – The newest of the four World Centers, Pax Lodge, is located in bustling London, England. Opened for programs in 1991, girls who visit the center today can investigate theater, gardens, sailing, castles, London, Girl Guiding history or community service. On the Pax Lodge website you can find information on programs through 2008, costs, a virtual tour, travel advice, accommodations and more. You can also request information about Pax Lodge at

World Center Anniversaries

May 2007 – Two of WAGGGS’ World Centers are celebrating very special anniversaries during 2007. In Switzerland, Our Chalet marks its 75th birthday with open days in August and the official anniversary in September.  Our Chalet, located in the Alpine village of Adelboden, Switzerland, was officially opened as the first of four WAGGGS World Centers in 1932 by the World Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell and Helen Storrow.
In Mexico, Our Cabaña celebrates its 50th anniversary during each of the Girl and Adult sessions in 2007. The actual 50th birthday of Our Cabaña is on July 24, 2007, which coincides with one of the eight Girl Friendship sessions during the summer season. Our Cabaña officially opened in July of 1957.

To learn more about the history of the World Centers and the celebrations, visit the Our Cabaña website or the Our Chalet website.
