Religious AwardsThe motivating force in Girl Scouting is a spiritual one. Every time we make the Girl Scout Promise, we promise "To serve God." Girl Scouts have many faiths and are welcomed to replace the word "God" with the term that best fits their spiritual beliefs. Though we may not all believe in the same god or practice our faiths in the same ways, exploring one's faith can help girls grow as Girl Scouts and as young women. The role of troop leaders and other Girl Scout volunteers is to pass on information to girls and their families so they may decide whether to participate in religious award programs for their faith. Girl Scouting provides information, not religious instruction because religious instruction is the responsibility of parents and religious leaders. Explore Your Own FaithTo Serve God… is a listing of religious recognitions for each faith, all of which can be worn on the front of the uniform. This publication is available at the Marilyn Carr Information Center. Court of Awards lists girls in GSCNC who told us that they earned their religious recognitions. Explore Other FaithsOpen Houses of Faith is an educational series of events for enhancing public awareness about different faiths. Each Open House event is hosted by a different church, mosque or temple in metropolitan Washington, D.C. Open Houses of Faith Patch program encourages girls to find out about a variety of faiths. Can be earned in conjunction with the Open Houses of Faith series, or on your own throughout the year. Exploring Spirituality is a set of activities developed by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to help girls strengthen the spiritual dimension of Girl Scouting, find out how spirituality is experiences around the world and explore the nature of spirituality in the lives of individuals and of communities.
