S'More ProgramsS'More programs are ones that girls and volunteers put on at your site or can be borrowed for large events. These programs cover a variety of topics and often the presenter will work with you to meet the needs of your specific program. Arrangements for these programs can be made using the S'More Program Request Form (download PDF or download Formatta version here). Please pay attention to the requested group size and be sure to submit your request at least six (6) weeks prior to your event date. History Programs Members of the Archives Committee will share the history of Girl Scouting and GSCNC with girls of every program level and the community at large. History is fun when offered in the form of exciting hands-on activities. History program presenters might bring displays of badges or equipment, vintage uniforms, games, workshops, fashion shows, or presentations. They will assist you to guide girls in trying badge requirements from handbooks of bygone eras, signaling, knot-tying, or sending messages in Morse Code. Some presenters share stories from the past of the five councils that merged to form GSCNC. History programs should serve at least 35 girls and/or adults. SingAlong Service The SingAlong Service is a group of Girl Scout volunteers (adults and teens) who like to sing and are prepared to help with Girl Scout music at service unit encampments, Thinking Days and other large events (minimum 35 girls) around the council. The purpose of the SingAlong Service is to keep alive our Girl Scout musical heritage and to share the joy of singing. GSCNC Chorus The GSCNC Chorus is a group of girls and adult volunteers who perform for events within the council. For an audience of at least 50, they will sing traditional Girl Scout songs, the National Anthem or any number of other pieces from their diverse repertoire. Maximum performance time is about 30 minutes. These girls can perform in uniform for formal occasions or more relaxed for a casual event. TAPIOCA: Teaching, Acting, Promoting Interest on Critical Areas TAPIOCA is a teen specialty group with interest and experience in drama and a desire to share with girls around the council. Girls write, stage, and perform original skits about contemporary issues. Auditions for this group are held in the summer of each year. A training retreat gives new participants extensive information about issues such as child abuse, teen pregnancy, substance abuse prevention, AIDS and date rape. New girl-developed skits are added to the repertoire each year. TAPIOCA is available to perform no more than twice a month for no longer than an hour at a time. The group prefers to have an audience of at least 50 people. EnviroScapes ® How do you show girls that our actions at home affect plants and animals here and even miles away? The EnviroScapes ® models and presenters demonstrate how construction sites, farms, shopping malls and even our own backyards can affect the health of our wildlife and drinking water. Specially trained volunteers will bring these kits and activities to your environmental events serving more than 35 girls. JASON Expeditions The JASON Project is a multi-disciplinary program that sparks girls' imaginations through hands-on explorations of oceans, rain forests, polar regions or volcanoes. Each year there is a different theme as girls embark on a scientific and cultural excursion to far-off lands and those nearby. GSCNC volunteers who have trained for the JASON program will present activities, crafts and demonstrations for this year's destination — perhaps building model canals for a trip to Panama or playing a game about giant marsh rodents for a trip to the Louisiana Bayou. There are often great activities for when you're outdoors for an encampment or other program. When you complete the S'more request form and indicate your interest in a JASON Expedition, GSCNC staff or a JASON volunteer will be in touch to figure out what activities will best suit your needs. Events should serve at least 35 girls. You will be responsible for the cost of supplies for the hands-on activities involved for this program. Traveling Wizards Traveling Wizards is a science program funded by Verizon Foundation that seeks to provide a day of science and math activities to girls in camps throughout the Washington metropolitan area. Trained volunteers travel to various summer day and evening camps to deliver the program. The message the Traveling Wizard bear is that science is fun. If you would like more information about the Traveling Wizards, contact program specialist Sandy Saha at 202-237-1670 ext. 210 or ssaha@gscnc.org. ResourcesThe following resources are available for troop programming. Each item may be integrated into an already existing program or may be a program in itself. All the resources listed on this page may be checked out after contacting the Program Department at 202-237-1670 ext 310. Screen Printing Learn the basics of screen printing from design and creation of silk screens to printing of posters or t-shirts. GSCNC has the basic supplies required, including screen frames, squeegees, and an assortment of fabric inks for screen-printing, as well as detailed instructions. Depending on the planned projects, a group may need to purchase additional supplies such as new silk for the frames and materials to set up the screen. Groups with some experience with silk screening or a willingness to experiment may borrow the equipment on their own. First time users might be more comfortable setting up a group workshop if scheduling can be arranged. Wooden Flag The 2'x4' wooden flag, with carrying case, will help teach the characteristics, history and vocabulary of the flag. The flag consists of removable stars, stripes and blue union. It may be constucted over and over again, while girls learn flag trivia. The Flag may be borrowed on its own or in conjunction with the American Flag Kit (see Program Kit Request Form — download PDF or Formatta Form here). Resource Library The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital has a number of resource books and videos that maybe checked out. Books and videos range in topics such as social issues, divorce, crafts, games, art, nature field guides, and sensitive issues. Contact program specialist at 202/237-1670 ext. 310 to discuss topics available. Games The Program Department has several board games. The topics of these games focus on social and sensitive issues such as making friends, alcohol and drug use prevention. Games can be used as discussion starters, to re-enforce topics learned, or in educational play.
