What kind of assistance is available to our troop?

  • Membership Financial Assistance may be requested for girls by a troop leader or a service unit registrar.  It covers required membership costs and troop dues up to $25/year.
  • Program Grants help individuals participate in Girl Scout activities and trips.
  • Troop Loans help troops participate in activities when funds are not available at the time payment (eg. waiting for cookie money).

How do I apply for Membership Financial Assistance for a Girl Scout?
To apply for Membership Financial Assistance fill out the B251 Financial Assistance form (available online in our forms section) and submit it to your Field Director to be signed off by the Area Manager.  You will receive shop items directly from the shop; checks will be mailed from the council office.  It can take up to 6 weeks to process Membership Financial Assistance.  Please submit it as soon as you are aware there is need.  Membership Financial Assistance is ongoing and can be applied for at any time.

How do I apply for a Program Grant?
A B252 Request for Program Grants form (available online in forms section) must be submitted to council.  It is then reviewed by the Program Grants Panel.  Program Grants should not replace responsible financial planning or underwrite event costs for an entire group.  Applications are due by the second Monday of each month to be considered in that month's meeting.  The Panel meets on the third Monday of the month and letters will be mailed with their decision 1-2 weeks after the meeting.

How do I apply for a Troop Loan?
Troop Loans use the same paperwork as a Program Grant (B252) and follow the same general guidelines. Troop loans must be repaid within one year.  Unpaid troop loans are considered a council debt.

The Grants form is complicated. How do I fill it out?
A detailed explanation of the B252 form is available with the request form.  Each question is on the application for a reason and skipping questions can delay consideration of your request.  If you have questions on the form, please contact Raquel Arellano, staff liaison to the Grants Panel, at rarellano@gscnc.org or 202-237-1670 ext. 270

What is the Program Grants Panel looking for?

  • Financial Need: Has a clear statement of need been provided?  What are the circumstances that make the request necessary?
  • Responsible Planning of Troop Activities:  Did the troop allow enough time to plan and carry out money-earning activities?  How many girls in the troop are participating?  How many girls in the troop are requesting assistance?
  • Cost of Activity/Expected Source of Funds:  Is the cost realistic based on the troop's money-earning capabilities?  What were the expected sources of funds?
  • Adults Requiring Grants:  Is their participation required by Safety Wise?  Did the troop consider the cost of the required adult in their planning and budget for those costs?
  • Impact of Panel Decision:  Without a grant, will the individual be able to participate?  Without a grant, would the applicant be the only one (or one of a couple girls) not participating?
