Take Our Daughters to Congress Event
Thank you very much for inviting me to participate in the Take Our Daughters to Congress event. I had the most amazing day!
I was paired with Congresswoman Maloney (U.S. Representative for New York's 14th District). Unfortunately, she was in New York City last Thursday because President Obama was speaking on Wall Street. Congresswoman Maloney chairs the Joint Economic Committee and is a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee. Manhattan is in her District. Both of my parents are Economists with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) so it was interesting for me to learn how much Rep. Maloney and her staff value the economic data available from BLS.
The staff members in Rep. Maloney's office were so friendly and they treated me professionally. They explained their various duties and responsibilities in serving the Congresswoman and the people in her District. Following their guidance, I was able to write a response letter to a constituent! I really enjoyed meeting everyone in the office. I was impressed by how smart they are and knowledgeable about the issues facing our country. I am still forming my ideas about what I want to study in college. Being able to experience what it is like to work in Congress has seriously inspired me to explore public policy as my future career field.
It was really interesting to attend the press conference with Speaker of the House Pelosi. When she was taking questions, I asked her how many of her staff members are female. She wasn't sure of the exact number but she said that the majority of her staff was female. It was such an honor to meet her. It was an added bonus to go on a tour with her and visit her office. The view from the Speaker's private balcony was impressive! I will treasure the copy of her book that she gave me and I have look forward to reading it. I have a copy of Congresswoman Maloney's book, also.
I enjoyed the program with Dara Torres and Apolo Ohno very much. I have never met so many accomplished and inspiring people in one day before.
Thank you, again, for all that you did to make it possible for me and the other Girl Scouts from our Council to be part of this extraordinary day.
