2014 National Book Festival

 

 

Who: Girls of all ages

 

WhatThe 2014 National Book Festival will bring book lovers of all ages together to celebrate books and reading. Consider a trip for your troop to the Library of Congress National Book Festival to hear from popular authors and illustrators, get books signed, and take part in fun activities. Order your Patch online at loc.gov/shop. Patches will also be available for purchase on-site at the festival. Don't forget to enter "A Book That Shaped Me" National Book Festival Summer Writing Contest, which encourages rising 5th & 6th graders to reflect on a book that has made a personal impact on their lives. Visit the contest web site for full entry details, contest deadline, prize information, and to see which local libraries are taking part this year.

C&O Canal Riley Lockhouse
Naomi Brookner, The Gazette.  Girl Scout demonstrates what life would have been like in 1873 at Riley's Lockhouse.
 Who: Brownie - Ambassador
What: Live the life of a C&O Canal Lock Keeper's family in the 1870s. An adult takes the training, works with the girls, then they come with the troop to Riley's Lock House on a Saturday or Sunday from 12:30-4:30 PM. Girls wear period clothes, act as docents, and do home crafts with the public. School service hours or Silver Trefoil hours can be earned by the girls during their service day! 
When: Adult training is Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 9:15 AM-2:30 PM

Volunteers Needed for Sleep-Away Camp

 

Who: Volunteers entering 7th grade to Adults 

 

What: Volunteers needed to check girls in and out for Sleep-Away Camp; this counts towards Council Service Hours!

 

Where: Fairfax County Government Center in Fairfax, Virginia 

 

When: Now till August 15, 2014 (every Sunday and Friday between those dates)
