Girl Scouts Get the Scoop - Day at the Newseum (J, C, S, A)

Nation's Capital and Central Maryland councils have partnered with the Newseum to offer an exciting day of journalistic exploration and discovery at the Newseum in Washington, DC.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 16, 9am-5pm

At Girl Scouts Get the Scoop - Day at the Newseum, Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors will be able to navigate the museum's displays and interactive exhibits which chronicles hundreds of years of news history and the power of the freedom of expression.

See a section of the Berlin Wall, read the day's news on the front pages of newspapers from around the world and view a collection of Pulitzer Prize photos. 

Tickets will be mailed in advance and troops can arrive at any time, spending as much or as little time as you wish visiting with us. Activities will be ongoing throughout the day but the event format will allow girls to take part in programming at their own pace and based on their interests.

Cost is $8 per person (several dollars less than the regular museum group rate) and includes museum entry and a pass allowing access to special tours, games, presentations and craft activities, with an emphasis on the role of women in the news, the impact of youth leaders and the Girl Scouts. Girls will also have the opportunity to share what they've learned and earn prizes. An optional event patch can be ordered for $1 each.

NEWSEUM DAY FAQ

Registration is closed for the event, can I still get tickets?
Once we have sold all of the discounted $8 tickets you can purchase tickets from the Newseum the day of the event for $10.  Please let them know that you would like the Girl Scout Day Discount when purchasing tickets.  If you purchase tickets from the Newseum you can still order a patch.

What other fun activities are happening on Feb 16th?
Want to have a yummy breakfast before going to the Newseum?  Hard Rock Cafe is hosting a special Girl Scout Breakfast on the morning of February 16th.  Learn more about this event by clicking here, please note reservations are required.

How do I get the patch?
If you ordered tickets through GSCNC a patch order form will be sent to you along with the tickets. If you purchased your tickets through the Newseum a patch order form will be available the day of the event.  Please note that we will NOT be collecting patch order forms the day of the event and they must be mailed to GSCNC.

What can my girls looks forward to?
In addition to hands-on activities brought to you by the Newseum, GSCNC is happy to have Media Panel the girls can attend at 11am.  Space is limited and is first-come, first-serve.  Stay tuned for location and more information.  

Is the Newseum Metro accessible?  
We do suggest taking the Metro to the Newseum since they do not have on-site parking and parking in downtown DC can be difficult to find.  The Newseum can be accessed by Judiciary Square on the Red Line and Archives/Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Station on the Green and Yellow Line.  More information can be found here on the Newseum's website: http://www.newseum.org/plan-your-visit/directions/index.html

Do I purchase bulk tickets or register each girl individually?For this program please purchase tickets as a troop or group. (No need to select each name separately, just tell us the total number of tickets.) All of the tickets will be mailed to the person that makes the purchase.  By purchasing tickets as a group there is a smaller chance of tickets getting mailed to the wrong address or lost in the mail.

When is the last day to purchase tickets?
January 2^nd, this allows us time to purchase the tickets to the Newseum and we will mail them in late January/ early February.

When can we arrive at the Newseum?
Since we will be mailing patches this year you can arrive at the time that works best for your group.

Can I send you the money for the patch now?
No, when we mail you the tickets we will include a patch order form.  Please mail the money and form back to GSCNC.  We will NOT be collecting patch order forms the day of the Newseum.

You said this connects to a Journey, which one?
The Newseum’s Girl Scout “Women in the News Scavenger Hunt” has some ties into the Girl Scout It’s Your Story- Tell It! Journeys.  Though you will not fully earn a journey by attending this program, it does have some connections.  Closer to the date of the program we will electronically send out the updated “Women in the News Scavenger Hunt” that outlines which areas of the journeys connects to Girl Scouts Get the Scoop- Day at the Newseum.

What if I can't go on the 16th for Girl Scout Day?

Can’t make it to the Newseum on Girl Scout Day? Consider visiting us as you celebrate Girl Scout World Thinking Day. The 2013 World Thinking Day theme is: girls worldwide say "together we can save children's lives.”

As you check out the Newseum’s exhibits, think about what issues are important to you and how you can use the news and media as ways to communicate with one another about children’s issues.

Jordan, Malawi, Pakistan, Republic of Ireland and Venezuela are the focus countries for this year’s World Thinking Day. Are any of these countries represented in the Newseum’s exhibits? How does the freedom of the press in these countries compare to that of the United States’?
