In Honor of All Who Served...
The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital has some stories to share of our girls honoring, learning about and helping those in the military.
Thanking WWII Veterans
One of Troop 3690's Cadettes has been volunteering with the Honor Flight Network by welcoming and thanking WWII Veterans as they arrive at Washington Dulles to visit and reflect at their memorial. She, with her younger cub scout brothers, led the Pledge of Allegiance at the WWII Memorial during the Honor Guard Ceremony for WWII Veterans from Chicago. Cadette Troop Greeted Veterans From Honor Flight Program
Cadette Troop 5958 of Ashburn, VA greeted World War II veterans at Dulles Airport. The vets are flown into Washington DC from across the country to visit the World War II Memorial as part of the Honor Flight program. Girl Scouts and Community Members Welcome Home Marine
Marine Corporal Josh Himan was critically injured in September 2009 in Hellmund Province, Afghanistan and as a result, he is paralyzed from the chest down. Corporal Himan has most recently been receiving outpatient treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. The Woodbridge Community in Prince William County gave a Grand Welcome Home to Marine Corporal Josh Himan in April 2011. Troop 6218 Learned About Military Families
Troop 6218 had a special visit from Lt. Col Steve Miska and his daughter, both came to help them with their flag ceremony. Lt. Col. Miska helped the girls fold the flag in the correct way and his daughter shared with the troop her experiences of growing up with a parent in the military.
Giving Service to our Heroes
Girl Scout Troop 6565 delighted residents at the Soldiers Retirement Home in Washington, DC on Veterans Day. The girls made cards and a mural for the residents as a day of volunteer service.
Holiday Community Service
Girl Scout Troop 860 is no stranger when it comes to community service. The Daisy/Brownie Troop decorated a Christmas tree at the Waldorf Jaycees for the Hospice Festival of Trees. Their theme was "Reminiscing over the Holidays".
In addition, they made care packages for our military troops. To help defray the cost of shipping overseas and some of the purchases, the troop held a bake sale and sold donuts.

U.S. Soldiers Received Cookies from Local Girl Scouts
Troop 5108 of Fairfax sent cases of donated Girl Scout cookies to several troops of servicemen and women living and working abroad. The Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 5108 received a card and photos from the 387th Air Expeditionary Group who thanked the girls for their cookie donations to the men and women serving in our military. Troop 274 Received a U.S. Flag from Army Troop in Afghanistan
Troop 274 at Mother of God School received a letter, certificate, & US Flag from Colonel Paul Hastings of the US Army. The flag from Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan, was flown in honor of Girl Scout Troop 274 for sending Girl Scout Cookies.

Girl Scout Troop Make Greeting Cards for Project Boomerang
Girl Scout Junior Troop 2934 from Falls Church, VA recently helped make greeting cards for healing and deployed soldiers through Project Boomerang. The girls designed greeting cards using stamps and recycled materials, including new and used cards, magazines and stickers. Project Boomerang is a project supported by Peace Lutheran Church.
Teen Troop Took Part in Service Project at National Museum of the Marine Corps
This fall, Girl Scout Teen Troop 3297 of Dumfries, VA took part in an important service project at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. The girls labeled, boxed and attached postcards to more than 400 helmet liners knitted by local citizens for American service men and women.
Troop 81365 Showed their Appreciation for the Troops by Making Care Packages
Troop 81356 put together three care packages to be sent to a navy troop stationed in Kuwait.
Washington Area Girl Scouts Participate in Mothers Day at the Wall
The Girls Scouts joined the Eleventh Annual Mothers Day at the Wall ceremony, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The event honored all those mothers that have children that have served in the armed forces and those that have served themselves. The girls showed their appreciation by showering the mothers with cards and flowers. The ceremony was brought to a finish with the Girl Scouts escorting the mothers to the wall where the they left their gifts.

Just missing the area blizzard, on January 29 Girl Scouts from Troop 76 and Troop 1996 of Prince William County, VA helped remove the holiday wreaths from the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery.
