Girl Scout Council Nation's Capital

50thAnniversary

Girl Scouts at Glen Echo

As our council celebrates its 50th anniversary, it is important to remember our rich history, our proud traditions and our enduring commitment to girls.

Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, as we know it today, was formed in 1963 and encompassed five area councils in existence at the time—National Capital Girl Scout Council, Girl Scout Council of Southern Maryland, Alexandria Girl Scout Council, Arlington Girl Scout Council, and Northern Virginia Girl Scout Council.

Gertrude “Bobby” Lerch was the first president of our Council. She acknowledges that our Council, with support from dedicated volunteers, parents and staff, found ways to bridge the racial and socio-economic divisions of the era to allow girls to be girls.

Take a look at the past presidents of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital.
