Great American Campout

Secretary of Interior Visits Camp White Rock

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewel selected to spend the Great American Backyard Campout with Girl Scouts at Camp White Rock on Saturday, June 28. This is the 10th anniversary of the program that connects young people with the outdoors. We are honored that the Department of the Interior chose our Council as the place for Secretary Jewel to meet girls in the great outdoors.

Secretary Jewell is a Girl Scout alumna and an avid outdoors’ woman. She was joined by Girl Scouts and volunteers along with Lidia Soto-Harmon, CEO and Denise Viau, Camping Services Manager to hike the beautiful 130 acre camp grounds.  Secretary Jewell participated in the camp activities that were planned and led by Girl Scout Cadettes from Service Unit 14-4 from Warren County. With the History of Time as the theme, the activities included making fire and cave drawings, toga parties at the pool, tie-dying socks, shredding T-Shirts and learning a flash-mob dance. Throughout the day everyone sang Girl Scouts songs, and Girl Scout Daisy troop 40486 retired the flag before the Secretary’s departure.

The Secretary is on a mission to connect young people with the outdoors. Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital has a long and rich history of providing girls with outdoor experiences through our camps and troop activities. We estimate that 50,000 of our members use our camp properties and over 4,000 Girl Scouts attend our sleep-away camps, and nearly 10,000 girls enjoy our day and evening camps each year.

Girl Scout Nation’s Capital operates eight camp properties, many which feature water access for canoeing and kayaking, archery ranges, swimming pools and beautiful camp grounds for hiking and games.
