Girl Scouts Give Back
When Girl Scouts complete a service project, they are upholding the promise they’ve made to “make the world a better place”. This is not just a slogan, but a call to action for Girl Scouts to think beyond themselves and find new ways to give back, making a positive impact on their community.
While working on their Brownie badges, Girl Scout Troop 15099 used their budget building and financial skills to sponsor a holiday dinner for a family of eight through a local 501c3 charity, Shepherdstown Shares. Using their hard-earned cookie money, these Girl Scouts planned their budget and menu for the holiday dinner and broke into teams to purchase the items (including a large turkey) for the family of eight.
“The girls learned that what they do and what they plan for impacts other people. They realized that some people don't have enough food, and they can make a difference, even through one meal, in the lives of others. ‘"Make the world a better place’." Said Girl Scout Troop Leader Angelina Gray.
“Each line of the Girl Scout Law impacts our decisions and influences planning badges and take- action projects. It serves as a meaningful guide to help the girls see how they can grow and learn how to make a difference in our world, no matter how big or small their acts of kindness are.”
Through project planning, teamwork, and communication, Girl Scout Troop 15099 made a direct impact on a family through their community. Showcasing what it means for Girls Scouts to give back and become the next generation of change-makers who make the world a better place.
