Part One: VIRTUAL THROUGH GSLEARN
Part Two: IN-PERSON - Camp Coles Trip (Stafford, VA) - May 3, 2026 (9:00AM-12:30PM)

THIS IS A HYBRID TRAINING. Participants must:

Complete the online modules and pass a quiz in the "204 Canoe" gsLearn course.

Successfully complete an in-person session.

The virtual portion of the training must be completed prior to attending the in-person portion. You can still register for the in-person session if you have not completed the virtual portion.

Adult Educators: Matt Ferguson and Philip Eliot

This training was developed by Girl Scouts Nation's Capital and certifies participants to facilitate canoeing for girl members of the Council. The course covers the basic skills and knowledge needed to safely and effectively take a group of Girl Scouts canoeing on up to Class I stretches of water. This course is for adults only.

In order to uphold the highest level of safety, a skills assessment is included as part of this course. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you have canoeing experience prior to the class.

The training involves practicing capsizing and reentering a boat from the water. It is mandatory that all participants get in the water for the training, no exceptions. Participants should be comfortable spending time in water where they cannot touch the bottom while wearing a PFD (lifejacket).

Participants must demonstrate an ability to re-enter the boat from deep water (i.e. where they cannot stand). If they are unable to re-enter the boat, limitations will be placed on their certification.

Participants:

  • Both parts must be completed to receive credit. Virtual part must be completed prior to attending the in-person session.
    • However, you do not need to complete the virtual person prior to registering for the in-person session.
  • Materials are included in the "additional references" section of the gsLearn course and should be thoroughly reviewed to prepare for the sessions.
  • Bring snacks and water for the in-person session. Dress for the weather; this is an outdoor class and you will be kayaking and getting wet. Synthetic clothing and layers are recommended. A change of clothes or towel for after the training are also recommended.
  • We cannot accommodate children during training sessions.
  • Participants over the weight limit of 240lbs should contact the instructor before registering.
