This overnight course qualifies participants to take a troop to established sites with readily accessible potable water and latrines or bathrooms for both the day cookout trips and the overnight camping trips. Skill building includes using kaper charts; building wood and charcoal fires and using portable cook stoves; selecting appropriate campsites; pitching tents; camping at sites with Adirondack shelters, glen shelters, platform tents, treehouses, cabins or lodges.

Your volunteer adult educators will contact you by e-mail prior to the class to give you instructions on what to bring, to ask about dietary restrictions, and to explain what to expect from the class.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
* Use resources to identify health and safety procedures necessary for a cookout or campout with Girl Scouts
* Identify various levels of progression in the areas of outdoor skills, outdoor cooking methods, and in Girl Ownership
* State the rules regarding Girl Scout Nation's Capital site maintenance
* State the process of securing a Girl Scout Nation's Capital campsite
* Use minimal impact camping procedures through proper site set-up, use and clean-up.
* Budget for and plan menus for a group, considering cultural, religious, and individual needs
* Prepare, cook, serve, and clean up a simple meal outdoors. Describe how to purchase, pack and store food supplies for a simple meal.
* Use the one pot, basic stick, skillet/griddle, and box oven cooking methods
* Safely build, maintain and extinguish an individual wood fire
* Use appropriate personal and troop equipment for an overnight experience.
* Participate in a form of grace, considering cultural sensitivity.
* Plan and/or participate in an outdoor flag ceremony, Girl Scouts' Own and Campfire Ceremony
* Skills sessions will be conducted outdoors. Indoor sleeping accommodations will be available.

Participants must have a current Girl Scout membership and a role that requires a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate children during training sessions.
