Camp May Flather, in Mount Solon, Virginia, sits on 50 beautifully wooded acres in the George Washington National Forest. The camp, named after May Flather, a friend of Lou Henry Hoover (First Lady and wife of President Herbert Hoover), has been enjoyed by Girl Scouts since it was built in 1930. The North River runs directly through the center of camp. The camp features lodges, platform tent and glen shelter units, a large open green, and hiking trails into the National Forest.
Camp May Flather features high adventure activities along with traditional camping. It has an archery, slingshot, and tomahawk range, challenge course, climbing tower and canoeing/kayaking opportunities at nearby Elkhorn or Todd Lakes.
Check out the George Washington National Forest website for information about the network of trails, primitive camping opportunities, and nearby lakes. The camp is serviced by the North River Ranger District, whose offices and rangers are great resources for information, maps and more.
Natural Chimneys Regional Park is only a few miles from the camp and boasts camping opportunities, a swimming pool, and two yearly jousting tournaments.
Reddish Knob is a great lookout spot and place to watch the sunset or the sunrise!
